I was wondering if I need a whole day to do this trip by taxi? Is it a few hours drive from Cairo?

Abydos is a long way from Cairo. However, it is only a few hours, maybe three hours away from Luxor. You can do this by taxi but the taxi must become part of the convoy that leaves the same time from Luxor. It is much easier to book with a local agent - it cost me £24 last year to do a day trip to Abydos and Denderra. You can take the train but as a tourist you are not supposed to get off at Abydos - but this can be done at a very low cost.

I am thinking that I won't have time for Abdos as I will be seeing Karnak that day, but was wondering about Dendara? If you were there as well, which (Abydos or Dendara) did you think was the most impressive? Do you know if I can just hire a taxi to Dendara, or need to go in the convoy?

Anywhere between Luxor and Aswan and Luxor and Cairo is off limits for tourists - you need to go in a convoy. Taxis may join these convoys. You will need all day to visit Karnak alone! It is a fabulous temple but huge!

I love Denderra - it is one of my faves, but Abydos is really quite near so it makes sense to see both.

If you are short on time see Karnak then visit the temple of Habu on the West Bank. Hop on the ferry then take a taxi, it should only cost you 70le to take you there, wait for you, then bring you back, as the valley of the artisans is also in the same place - get him to stop there for you also.
