Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Luxor Is there a way to see Nefertari's tomb?
Posted: Sat June 13, 2009 01:14 AM UTC
Is there any plans of re-opening it, or any kind of private tour (that isn't only for the rich and famous), or is this just wishful thinking?

Thank you!

The tomb is open....but not for the general public. The artwork inside is far too fragile to allow general visits (the moisture from people's breath and sweat does huge amounts of damage to all such tombs).

That is why entrance is limited in numbers, and visits limited in time and are extremely expensive. I doubt that this will change.

I agree it's very very difficult to get to see the Nefertari tomb unless you know Zahi Awass who is the chief of the Ancient Ruins (?) or someone like that...but if you have a very influential guide and money, you can sometimes bribe your way in. There was a closed part of Luxor when I visited and it had the half-lioness God and my guide was able to get me to see it inside (he talked with the caretaker with a little basheesh)

Zahi Hawass is Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities in Egypt, and a very powerful man. He has his own website:

http://www.drhawass.com/

Whatever one might think of the man himself, he has done a very great deal to improve matters in Egyptian archaeology, especially bringing in the requirement that excavations are properly published before permission for further excavation is granted. Far too many excavations, from all over the world, remain undocumented.

Unless you have a substantial chunk of available cash (I don't think a small bribe wil work in this case) I think you may have to explore the tomb only in virtuality.
