Bring car in a ferry from Heines Posted: Thu June 11, 2009 03:21 PM UTC
Hello,
we are have rented one car in Vancouver and going thru Canada to Alaska.
For coming back we are planning to go from Seward to Haines - Haines to Ketchnikan and from Ketchnikan to port Hardey(Vancouver island)- Canada by ferry lines.
Somebody knows which can be the total cost for 2 adults+cabin+car separately. Depending of the costs we will thing about the possibility of leave the car in Haines and back without the car.
Tks and rgds,
Guillem.

Your renting a car in Vancouver and thinking of leaving it in Haines AK, don't think that is doable and if so it will cost you a small fortune.

If you take the ferry to Port Hardy, that would be from Prince Rupert on BC Ferries, you may be able to rent a car from there to Vancouver. Or you could take the Alaskan Ferry System to Bellingham and rent a car from there to Vancouver. Just some thoughts for you.

Tks but my question is how to come back to Vancouver. we will rent a car in Vancouver and drive to rocy mountains, banff, Whitehorse, and Anchorage and now my problem is how to combine the trip back with my car rented. Otherwise we like to spend some days in teh zone of Skyway and Juneau.
Tks again and sorry If I am not well explained.

You could use Alaska State Ferry system in conjunction with the BC Ferry system to get your car back to Vancouver.

http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/index.shtml
is the official state website for the ferry system. There are several private ticket companies that sell tickets in combination with working the ferries in individual towns. A quick check just now shows fare from Haines to Prince Rupert as $160/adult plus $350 for the vehicle (depending on length of vehicle, but most are under 19') plus the cost of a cabin if you don't camp on deck.
We have traveled around Alaska extensively by ferry over the years. A great way to see the state without the glitz and crowds of the cruise ships - and a lot cheaper.
You might think about taking the ferry from Haines to Prince Rupert, BC, and driving the last bit.
