Me again - my brother will be in New York on his own for 4th July, can anyone recommend something for him to do as he'll probably never get the chance to experience this type of celebration again!

There are several places to watch the fireworks on both sides of the East River which separates Manhattan from Brooklyn. The nicest I think is under the Brooklyn Bridge on the Brooklyn side (walking over the bridge from Manhattan is part of the fun). There are some good pizza places on the Brooklyn side as well as a 'home made' Ice Cream place which used to be a firehouse for those who manned a fireboat right at the edge of the River. The fireworks are on the Hudson River, WEST SIDE this year, as indicated in the link. It's the 400th aniversary of Hudson's Voyage up the Hudson.

I'm glad you posted that, I didn't know about the change. Although that's where they used to always do it years ago.
A great place to watch them this year is Weehawken, New Jersey, which occupies a cliff high above the Hudson River.
From Port Authority bus terminal you can take any number of buses that travel along Boulevard East (ask at the information desk) and it's a short ride (most of the time)through the Holland Tunnel and over to NJ. I'm sure that area will be packed out though.

Battery Park City is one of the best places to see the fireworks.

You can see the JERSEY CITY fireworks from Battery Park City. They are launched from the Jersey Side of the River at Liberty State Park. The MACY"s fireworks will be launched from six barges in the Hudson River from 24th -- 50th Streets. That's almost 3 miles north of Battery Park City.
