New York City New York Transportation Options!
Posted: Tue June 9, 2009 07:20 PM UTC
Hi,

My brother is in Mahattan from 1st-7th July and is considering buying a New York City Pass for $155.00 (7 Day), with this is the option to add a Bus Pass but the difference in cost is $60.00. This seems a lot as here in Manchester, UK a Weekly Pass would only be $20.00 - $40.00.

He will probably only need to travel for 5 days as he'll be leaving on 6th Day - does anyone know whats the cheapes way to get to and from all the main attractions and if you can pre-book the tickets online? Can you get a all in one travel pass that does bus and subway?

Thanking you all in advance for any help.x

A 1 day MTA unlimited pass is $7.50 and it costs $25 for 7 days, which includes bus and subway. That would seem to be the way to go.

The New York City Pass is for attractions like the Empire State Building, Statue of Libery, Circle Line, Musuem of Modern Art, etc. Whether or not it is worth it depends on what sights he is going to see. Should be able to figure that out from the website. Admission fees can add up $ESB is $18.50, MOMA $20.
The "Bus Pass" not for Public Transport, it's for the hop on hop off tourist buses.

The MTA seven day is for public buses and Subway and prices are going up June 28th to $2.25 single ride $27 seven day unlimited pass. Whether or not this is worth it depends on a few things -- where he's staying, how much walking he can handle, day's activities. It's conceivable to plan so on one day you can walk everywhere you plan to go, another day to only require on or two subway or bus rides.

Thank you so much for your replies!

I have booked his New York Pass for him but gave the upgrade tourist bus pass a miss!

The 7 day pass for $27.00, where would he get that from? Or is it as simple as purchasing on the bus? If so what would he ask for?

My sister has been to New York a few times but never for 7 days, she said she has been stopped in Times Square and sold the Tourist Hop on Hop Off pass for a day for just a few Dollars - that might be an option if he just pays per day as one of you mentioned on the public busses and spends a day or 2 walking - it's not just about cost it's also about seeing the most of New York whilst he's there!

There are self-service machines at every subway stop, you can use cash or credit cards. And as mentioned, it's good for buses as well, which my wife prefers to use if possible since you get to see things as you travel. Many of the bus routes in Manhattan simply go up one Avenue and then down the other, so it's not too complicated. Although a line chart of all the stops is posted at each stop- if you can make sense out of it.

Don't do it..
You won't get the time to make it worth your money AND enjoy what you see and do at the same time.
