There's the famous Bear pit, and the Clock in the town centre.

Not a local here but someone who loves Bern a lot... Unfortunately my Bern travel page is still a fragment. But if you use the destination search at the top right of this page, you will be taken to the "travel guide" which shows everything members have ever written about the city on VT.

My favourite thing is strolling the streets of the old town, looking at the little shops underneath the arcades (some are really weird), enjoying the historical architecture and ambience. And note the statues on the fountains.

The old bear pit is currently empty. The last inhabitant died this spring. A new and much roomier bear enclosure is being built on the Aare bank and new bears will only move in when this is finished.

If you are interested in art, the Kunstmuseum in the old town has an excellent collection, especially classic modern.
Then there is the new Paul-Klee-Zentrum with temporary exhibitions - check what is on. If the Klee and the Orient exhibition is still open, that one was excellent. Bus No. 12 takes you there.

See the Münster church, and climb the steeple.

A guided tour of the Bundeshaus (parliament) is also recommended.

Walk up to Rosengarten for the view of the old town.

In case you are still there on the first weekend in July, there is an arts and crafts market on the Münster platform every first Saturday of the month.

Unfortunately the Bear Pit and the Clock although associated with Bern are really not that exciting. They were building a new Bear Pit when we were there last October, but I don't know if it is yet completed. We found walking through the main street viewing the various fountains and the old church in town were much more to our liking. If you would like you can go to my VT page on Bern and see what I have to say about a few different things in town and also view some pictures. http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/f8615/a9170/4/

The town is very easy to walk. On Mondays a lot of the shops are closed, at least they were when we were there on a Monday afternoon.

Greg, I have last been to Bern in early April (when Pedro was still alive) and there is already a tip about the bear pit on my of so incomplete Bern page, including a photo of the construction site as it looked then. There is also a link to the Bärengraben website where they tell the story of Pedro, the last bear, and show the plans for the new bear park.
The new enclosure will be a much, much better home for the bears than the old sorry bear pit. They will even have their own pool, as it has a bit of the river fenced off for the bears to swim in. They say it will be completed in autumn 2009 - let's see. The future inhabitants are still living at Tierpark Dählhölzli now. They don't want to put them into the old bear pit in the meantime because of the noise of the constructions works and because moving now and moving again in a few months would be too much for the animals.

Thanks a lot for advices. Special thanks to Kathrin E.

To Swiss33: Sorry, sent response to your address instead of answering to a last one (see bellow).
But will appreciate your recommendations on how to add to my profile a map with places I visited.
Sorry again.
Thanks.

>how to add to my profile a map with places I visited.

Open "Your travel pages" (link at the top of this page).

To add countries and dye your map, click the country 1x (blue - have been there), 2x (have lived there) or 3x (want to visit). Blue and red countries will then show up in the list below.

To add individual locations, click "Add a location to your map". Type the name of the location - VT usually uses the spelling in the local language as long as the language uses the Latin alphabet. Click "Search". Select the correct location from the list that shows up.

Another option: Open the travel guide to location xyz. Underneath the "member's pages" or "top 5 pages" list on the right you find a link named "Build your own xyz page".

(There are more ways but these are the easiest.)

I am in Bern for this week. The city is really so nice that it's not possible not to fall in love with it. I travelled quite a lot in Switzerland but Bern is really an unique city. We took lots of pictures although the weather wasn't friendly enough these days.

It's always nice to hear back from people who have used the travel forums to get their impressions. Hopefully we will see some of those pictures you took on your Bern page.
