Re: Places to visit in Bern? Posted: Thu June 4, 2009 09:52 PM UTC
Not a local here but someone who loves Bern a lot... Unfortunately my Bern travel page is still a fragment. But if you use the destination search at the top right of this page, you will be taken to the "travel guide" which shows everything members have ever written about the city on VT.
My favourite thing is strolling the streets of the old town, looking at the little shops underneath the arcades (some are really weird), enjoying the historical architecture and ambience. And note the statues on the fountains.
The old bear pit is currently empty. The last inhabitant died this spring. A new and much roomier bear enclosure is being built on the Aare bank and new bears will only move in when this is finished.
If you are interested in art, the Kunstmuseum in the old town has an excellent collection, especially classic modern.
Then there is the new Paul-Klee-Zentrum with temporary exhibitions - check what is on. If the Klee and the Orient exhibition is still open, that one was excellent. Bus No. 12 takes you there.
See the Münster church, and climb the steeple.
A guided tour of the Bundeshaus (parliament) is also recommended.
Walk up to Rosengarten for the view of the old town.
In case you are still there on the first weekend in July, there is an arts and crafts market on the Münster platform every first Saturday of the month.
