Dubai Dubai in 23 hrs...what to do?
Posted: Wed June 3, 2009 05:33 PM UTC
I will be landing in dubai from london in mid June at about 8.40 am and leaving the next day at 7.40 am.

Any suggestions on what I could do there in this short time?

IS there a certain area in Dubai where I can ask the taxi driver to go to where I can visit shopping malls, sougs or at least some places of interest which are all quite close by within walking distance given that I don't have that much time.

Are there cheap city tours available form the airport for say half a day?

thanks

First thing, we've already had temperature up at 50C. It's cooled off today to 40C but humidity is at 80% and it gets worse as we move through June. That means wandering around outdoors is very uncomfortable and you can't do it for long.

Having said that, the most interestig part of the city for me is the original city around the Creek. That's where the spice and gold souks are for example, plus old shopping streets plus the magic of the Creek itself. Because of the temperature I'd do that as early as you can or wait until after dark.

Dubai Museum, not far from the Creek in Bur Dubai, is well worth a visit. It's in an old desert fort and has a large air-conditioned underground section.

You should also use the BigBus tour to get out to New Dubai where all the amazing developments are. It's hop-on hop-off so you can visit, for example, Madinat Jumeirah and some of the new malls such as Mall of the Emirates. It'll also take you along the beaches, by Burj Al Arab etc. Details in my Dubai Tips.

Emirates were marvellous when we stayed over with meeting us at the airport and setting us up for tours.

We were there in cooler weather . It may be too hot for you to do the 4WD desert tour but we rode over the dunes, saw the sun set, rode a camel , saw belly dancing, ate dates in the desert, and enjoyed the feast.

I agree the old part is more true Dubai but at least the desert gets you closer to something real than the shopping malls and buildings.

Be carefull though we were not specific enough with our taxi driver and drove such a long way to a shopping mall to have only about 30 minutes left to spend there. Luckily cost of taxi not too bad. Marg

Deira City Center Shopping Mall is very near to Airport and you can have a relaxed time over there and perhaps a good meal. From airport so many buses pass through to different sections of Dubai, one going to Sabakha bus station which is very near to creek!!
