San Diego in August with a 4 month old? Posted: Wed June 3, 2009 12:52 AM UTC
Hey all. Me and my husband are contemplating traveling to San Diego with our son who will be 4 months old by this time and would love some ideas, recommendations and opinions. Is Aug. a weather month? What is the family friendlyist area for us to stay? What should we include on our visit? We will be there for one 6-8 days in the middle of the month. We are going to try VRBO first for an apartment so if anyone has any recommendations we'd appreciate it. If we can't find an apartment/house we will be using priceline. Any takers for a house swap? We are in San Antonio near Fiesta Texas. Thank you in advance.

Here is the detailed weather for San Diego in August:
AUGUST IS NORMALLY OUR WARMEST MONTH WITH THE NORMAL HIGH OF 77.8
DEGREES, THE NORMAL LOW 67.3 DEGREES AND THE MONTHLY NORMAL OF
72.6 DEGREES. EXTREMES SINCE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE NATIONAL
WEATHER SERVICE RECORDS IN 1872 WERE 98 DEGREES IN 1955 AND 54
DEGREES IN 1895. READINGS OF 80 DEGREES OR HIGHER WERE FAR FROM
COMMON AND THERE HAVE BEEN 13 DAYS DURING THE ENTIRE PERIOD
WITH MAXIMUM RECORDS FOR THE DAY OF 90 DEGREES OR HIGHER.
RAIN SELDOM FALLS IN THE CITY AND 60 PERCENT OF THE AUGUSTS HAVE
BEEN WITHOUT A MEASURABLE AMOUNT. THE MONTHLY RAINFALL AVERAGE
IS 0.10 INCH AND THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF RAINY DAYS WITH 0.01 INCH
OR MORE IS ONE. HOWEVER, IN 1977 THERE WAS 2.13 INCHES FROM THE
REMNANTS OF TROPICAL STORM DOREEN. ALSO, IN 1873 AND 1854 THERE
WERE 1.95 INCHES AND 1.36 INCHES RESPECTIVELY. AS IN THE
OTHER SUMMER MONTHS, THUNDERSTORMS HAVE BEEN RARE AND NEVER
SEVERE EXCEPT IN THE MOUNTAINS AND DESERTS. THE HIGHEST WIND
RECORDED AT THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BEING ONLY 29 MPH.
USUALLY SKIES BECOME CLEAR BY MIDMORNING AND AS A RESULT SUNSHINE
IS PLENTIFUL WITH A MONTHLY MEAN OF 70 PERCENT OF POSSIBLE
SUNSHINE AND IS THE 6TH SUNNIEST MONTH OF THE YEAR. CLEAR DAYS
AVERAGE 15, PARTLY CLOUDY 12, CLOUDY 4 AND 1 DAY WITH HEAVY FOG.
THERE IS LITTLE CHANGE IN RELATIVE HUMIDITY FROM JULY, THE
AVERAGE BEING 81 PERCENT IN THE EARLY MORNING, 68 PERCENT NEAR
NOON AND 66 PERCENT IN THE LATE AFTERNOON.
Other then that going to the zoo and Balboa Park and over to Coronado Island would be pleasant days out doors.

It's hard to answer your question about the friendliest family area in San Diego as most places are family friendly.
Also, what to recommend that you should include in you visit is difficult because your baby is only four months old and the main impact for you would be to keep to the baby's schedule while out sight seeing. There are lots of parks and beaches where you can suspend your sight-seeing, stop for a picnic while the baby takes a nap. At Balboa Park, for example, there is a nice tree shaded park for kids just behind the Ruben H. Fleet Center that would be a perfect spot to get out of the sun, usually breezy, much cooler and let the baby sleep comfortably.
The weather in August is usually pretty warm, but not really too hot, especially if you'll be along the coastal areas, inland it will be much warmer. Contrary to Rich's fact sheet, I'd say that September and the early part of October is the hottest time period here.
If you look on my Ocean Beach page you see a few cottages for rent that might work for you. Also on my Old Town page they have cottages, but I haven't checked them out lately so can't say for sure. Take a look and try contacting them. I don't know anything about "house-swapping" so can't help you there.
If you tell us what type of things you'd like to do while here I could give you specific ideas.

It is pretty warm in San Diego but if you're staying near the beach (think La Jolla, Del Mar, etc) the temp stays pretty constant. Be aware that even though it's warm outside, the waters might still be cold at the beach. 4-months old are notorious for not wanting to do much but sleep & eat so I think it's up to you what you want to see. Pacific Beach is more of a singles scene, Ocean Beach has a fair amt of drugs. Downtown San Diego has a lot of hotels but it's downtown near the Gaslamp district... not exactly a kid-friendly scene aside from Horton Plaza (shopping mall on Broadway/Front/3rd St). Del Mar is to the north of San Diego but La Jolla is kind of pricey. Any of the hotels along Hotel Row on the 8 Freeway are ok but they are about 15-20 min away from the beach, depending on traffic. And trust me, there's a lot of traffic going to the San Diego beaches in August. Hard not to have fun in San Diego so enjoy yourselves.
