Maui Maui in July

We are heading to Maui in July ... pretty stoked since I haven't been there since late 90s and my wife has never been there at all. Just had a couple questions ...

Is there surf in Ka'anapali, specifically, in front of the Ka'anapali Ocean Inn? (http://www.kaanapalioceaninn.com/)

Do you need a 4-wheel drive car to make it up to the peak of Haleakala?

Thanks!

Can't really comment on the surf but if you try, you can surf most anywhere with the waves. It's not as exciting as the North Shore in peak season, but it does work.

You do not need a 4-wheel drive for the Mt. If you're in shape you can do it on a road bike, not even a Mt. Bike with the third gear to climb walls. Word or warning on the bikes though, depending on weather there can be ice on the road so corners can be, ah.... tricky. Do remember that although it may be 70-90 (depending on the time of morning you start the climb) it could be below freezing at the top.

The Ka'anapali Ocean Inn is part of the Royal Lahaina Resort and the surf is very calm in this area as it is flat most of the time. Great for those that want to snorkle as there is a reef about 70 yards out with a channel about 20 feet deep. I have stayed at the cottages at Royal Lahaina and the area seems to be less crowded on this side of Black Rock then the Sheraton Maui side which is one hotel after another, past Whalers Village, and more hotels. Regular car rentals are fine to get to the parking lot at the top of Haleakala. As mentioned, it can be very cold at the top and also not much oxygen so anyone with a heart condition should ask their doctor about being at 10,000 feet altitude. You have to leave the Ka'anapali area about 2 hours before sunrise to get to the top of Haleakala for the actual sunrise. Look for the silversword in bloom and the Ne Ne birds. Aloha.
