It would help if you tell us exactly what you mean by 'not expensive.' That really differs from one person to another. NYC is fairly expensive to begin.

We did sleep in a rather small hotel in Chelsea (Manhattan'; although our room was not too spacious, it was clean and very affordable (for New York) with public transportation nearby.
See for more info of Chelsea Lodge: http://www.chelsealodge.com/index.html

happy travels

The Pennsylvania Hotel is cheap, something of a dump, and has a fabulous location.

My husband got an amazing deal on Priceline this weekend - worth a try.

i second chelsea lodge. we stay there every time we go to new york. it's about 20 minutes walking distance from everything and not too expensive. i usually stay in one of the brownstone apartments with a couple of other people i travel with (chelsea lodge suites) but the B&B looks nice too. the owners are great.

Hey there,
It's hard finding something cheap and nice, but there are 2 good options I know of, the first is the Big Apple Hostel in the heart of midtown, and also Bubba and Bean Lodges on the Upper East side. The Big Apple hostel is indeed a hostel, but you can organise a private room that's much cheaper than a regular hotel. Bubba and Bean on the other hand is extremely cosy, affordable and close to public transport. Check out www.urwurld.com for other useful travel tips! They don't seem to list a 1000 useless things, but rather a considered selection of things definitely worth doing.
Cheers.

OK, letīs see, I would like to spend around 200 usd per night, and I would like to stay in an area where I can go for a walk after 6pm (when you really feel exhausted after the whole day walking) and have a beer, dinner in a cozy place withouth spending 100usd.

I was thinking about chelsea or greenwich village, the chelsea lodge looks nice.

Which area would you recomend?

PS I know that there are plenty of hotel reviews, pity that most of them are useless because there are many people who love collecting nonsense tips just to show their pics... I do not want to offend anyone but starting to be tired of reading lots of tips with lack of info.

You might enjoy staying on the Upper West Side. It's a great neighbourhood with lots of restaurants and also it's very safe, as really is most of Manhattan. Lots of people are on the subways at night and milling around, especially this time of year. On the Avenue is a good hotel, but there are lots of other up that way, too. www.quikbook.com often has excellent deals on hotel rooms and you can check there by location.

I stayed recently at The Time Hotel on W. 47th in the theatre district. It was well run and fine - subway a block away and friendly staff. I wanted something fairly central.

i'm definitely thinking the chelsea lodge would be great for you. it meets all your requirements. it's pretty much a residential neighborhood. there's even a police station close by if i remember correctly. you have lots of cheap restaurants, cool bars close by in the village and the chelsea market. check out the reviews on trip advisor. they are consistently good.
