Just went to Anchorage 2 weeks ago and it was awesome --- we did rent a car and it was easy to drive around. I am so glad you are bringing your 8 year old -- your kid will have a blast. I would definitely suggest going to Seward for the tour of the Kenai Fjords to see some wildlife - I have included a lot of my recent pictures in my travel pages here on VT. You will love the boat ride which will get you o see porpoises, seals and even killer whales! Seward is also where the Iditerod Dog Sled Race starts and it is nice to see the monument from where it is. It only took us about over two hours I think to reach Seward.
The Portage glacier was a favourite before but it has been melting and the tunnel leading to it and Exit glacier were closed when we went - I am not sure if it was due to road repair or avalanche.
The southwestern part has Homer and it's also a nice drive where you can see little towns with some Russian touches along the way. Homer Spit was nice to walk around and we saw bald eagles there and there were lots of people fishing.
You have two choices of where to see animals - one is the small but nicely maintained Alaska Zoo (which is right in Anchorage) and the other is a drive-through kind of facility along Seward Highway - you'll pass it along as you go to either Homer or Seward - just ouside Anchorage.
It will be whale season when you go and there will be a lot of tours available but I can say Major Tours did a good job in showing us the wildlife when we were there - they do have a park ranger on board to guide you through what you see. Bring binoculars for your kid by the way...
Can't comment on Juneau since I have not been there yet --- but Anchorage and the surroundign area already kept us busy....I could write more but my wife is waiting for me to bring her and the kids to a resort here to swim...please just see my very recent Alaska pages...Have a nice day, jumpingnorman of Arizona :)

Your question is intimidating and hard to answer. Alaska is such a large state with so much to see that it is difficult to describe here. I would suggest that you pull up some of the Alaska pages that many people have put a lot of time and effort into creating. You call pull up the whole state on VT but also by town. Some good pages on Anchorage, Seward, Juneau, Homer, Kodiak, Fairbanks, Denali, etc. We are all just traveling folks here and we use the sight to record our journeys.
My last word of advice is not to try and see too much in one visit. Alaska is like a large country.
