Posted: Sat May 30, 2009 12:07 PM UTC
Hi all,

I would be leaving prague and head to vennia but i was wondering if there would be any major advantages or disadvantages if i were to go via bus or train? And could i get to prague and buy the tickets or should i book them online would there be any chance that it was peak season and it would fill up really fast?? i would be travelling 30jun or 1 july. Thanks in advance!

Hi! On the way from Prague to Vienna I prefer to use "student agency bus". It's pretty cheap and so comfortable. New buses with a/c, free coffee and Wi-Fi onboard. I paid for overnight bus trip €16 OW. Buses operate 3 or 4 times daily. You can book it on this page:

The bus is still EUR 16/one-way and takes 5 hours. I would prefer the 2 daytime departures over the night departure.

Trains take 4:32. Normal 2nd class one-way fare is EUR 58.20. Offers are available from EUR 29, but valid for a specific train only. Seat reservation is recommended for your travel dates.

Although Student Agency and Eurolines use good and comfortable buses trains offers somewhat more comfort and space. On the other hand is most expensive. Best offer is from https://eshop.cd.cz/ - online price 517 CZK (around 18 EUR at the moment). This offer is valid only for some trains - have to check if time suits you. Trains are not sold out, but online special price offer expires three days before departure day.

With Student Agency your ticket says Prague-Vienna but in reality you take bus Prague-Brno and then change to other bus Brno-Vienna (departs around 15 minutes after Prague bus arrival). It is cheapest option. Might get sold out on some dates/times - earlier reservation is recommended.

Other bus option is Eurolines. They have different departure times, might suit you better. Direct bus to Vienna, discounts for early bookers. http://www.bei.cz/

We took the train, Vienna to Prague, just over 4 hours and a nice trip. We reserved tickets before we left home, however I was informed on weekends it can get busy, if you are in Prague a few days prior to travelling you most likely get a ticket.
