Nice trip plan Posted: Sat May 30, 2009 10:25 AM UTC
Hiya,
We are booked to arrive in Nice on a saturday early morning and leave from Marseille on Monday afternoon,
We were thinking od apending 2 days in Nice and heading to Marseille for the day early on monday
Can anyone suggest any places we can visit around nice, should we try to fit in Monaco as well? or are 2 days not enought/too much for Nice?
We like to experiance local culture, food, monuments, architecture and visit scenic places.
Thanks
ER

To see much of what this marvelous place offers, two weeks rather than two days - you will hardly scratch the surface. (Still, you can always come back and pick up where you left off!)
Best plan is to make a half day excursion to a place nearby of your choice, then return to Nice for futher exploration the rest of the day and eating out.
Monaco is the top of most peoples list - easily reached by train or bus. After this, the choice is betweenn one of the perched villages - St Paul de Vence or Eze Village, and feet on the ground somewhere like Villefranche and St Jean Cap Ferrat - the villa Ephrussi is a popular visit.
Within Nice, do what everyone does - ascend the Colline du Chateau, explore the old town and the port, the Cours Saleya, promenade on the promenade, and most fun pick a restaurant for the evening
And hope the weather is good!

Skip Marseille and stay in Nice. Our favorite part of Nice was the Old Quarter, especially in the evening, when its restaurants and bars are in full swing.
Around Nice, there are a lot of interesting little towns, including Antibes, Eze, St. Paul de Vence, and Villafranche-sur-Mer. We found Monaco to be a letdown compared to the others, which have much more character and a friendlier vibe. Cannes is also near Nice, if you want a day at the beach. However, we found Cannes to be a bit snooty and less welcoming to tourists passing through.
There are a number of art museums in the vicinity of Nice, including the Chagall, Matisse, and Beaux-Arts Museums in Nice; the Picasso Museum in Antibes; and the Fondation Maeght near St. Paul de Vence. The following link has info about a number of the Nice museums:

Actually you have 1 ½ days in Nice. Going to Monaco takes a full day, or you will only remember bus and train stations. That leaves ½ for Nice. I would rather suggest staying in Nice and save Monaco for your next trip.
Find out in advance what is closed on Sundays – they take leisure seriously. Keep in mind that restaurants and cafes have lunch breaks – that’s when they go for lunch, not you.
Read Nicelife’s pages - it will do you good, especially on a rainy day.
