Sharm El Sheikh Spending Money
Posted: Fri May 29, 2009 03:19 PM UTC
Me and my girlfriend have booked up for 2 weeks in sharm el sheikh in july. Our accomodation board is bed and breakfast. However, we are really unsure as to how much spending money we will need. All we are looking to bring is enough to pay for meals and a couple of drinks. How much is a safe amount to bring? Many thanks

well technically any amount should be safe - if you use a safe deposit box and take out only what you think you will need for that visit out of the hotel -

you should find eygpt a little cheaper than places like spain and greece - i think and you will need to budget for lunch - dinner - snacks and drinks which i would say could see the best part of 40- 60 gbp daily depending on where you eat and drink ( don't forget to wash < with bottled water> any fresh produce you may buy) - and if you have any leftover there are some good souveniers to buy -
hope you enjoy
Julie

you did not say 'where' you'll go.
At Naama Bay or 'old Sharm' you could walk for eating in restaurant or buying at shops but there are places/hotels quite far, some in the middle of nowhere, a dayly transfer could have a significant quote of how much is safe to bring.

There are ATM's and many places will take credits cards, so you don't have to carry much with you from your country. Of course, cash withdrawall will cost comissions. The first days will give you an idea how much you'll be needing throughout your stay and will you avoid taking currency you didn't spend back home.

Washing fresh produce with bottled water is a bit tooo much and I would say that it is not necessary.

I agree that Egypt is a little cheaper that some places like Spain but Sharm is several folds more expensive than the rest of Egypt. Where you eat and how you spend your time can also have a huge impact on your budget .. You can easily pay twice as much for a meal in Naama bay compared to something similar in old Sharm etc.. What I tend to do is take GBPs in cash with me and convert to LEs over the counter at any egyptian govenment bank .. There is one actually in the airport so you don't even need to bring any Egyptian currancy with you from home .. This way you get the best rates , pay no commission and you can also convert back any Egyptian money left with you back at the same bank using the cirtificate you get for the first transaction .. These banks are everywhere and are even open in the evening .. I still have my cards for the ATM as a back up .. just in Case .. All the best
