Madrid Card/Tourist Travel Pass? Posted: Fri May 29, 2009 10:02 AM UTC
I will be in Madrid for one full week (including 1-day trips to Toledo, Segovia and perhaps Avila).
Am debating purchasing either the Madrid Card or the Tourist Travel Pass or both?
Despite the online discount the Madrid card for 48 hours, for instance, seems expensive...
The Tourist Travel card otoh is reasonable, a 5 day pass is only Euro 17.60 within Zone A. Zone T is double the price. Which am I likely, as a tourist, to find more useable?
Or is there something better, like the Barcelona T-10 for instance?
Your suggestions and recommendations most welcome!

I donīt know the T10, but if this is a card you get with 10 trips, in Madrid you have the same, to travel by bus or tube and I would go for it.

Re: Madrid Card/Tourist Travel Pass? Posted: Fri May 29, 2009 05:46 PM UTC
the best way to travel in metro/bus in Madrid is the abono turistico Zone A which central Madrid and where the main attractions are cost 23,60 euros for 7 days from first day of use. To go to Toledo, Segovia and perhaps Avila you use cercanias trains ,different pricing for each, as they are outside Zone A or the Bus.
If you can bunch up your trips to those other cities say at the begining, then the remaining days in Madrid might be only 4-5 days ,which the abono turistico for Zone A comes to 17,60 euros for 5 days.
Zone T covers Toledo but not the other two, so for one city, keep it separate and use only the zone A abono turistico.
The abono turistico is only one card with multiple use , for metro ,cercanias trains, and buses,so its more convenient.
buy it upon arrival at Barajas airport T2 metro entrance on line 8, machines or counter available. If you need to navigate let me know ::)

and the Madrid Card is for sightseeing, covers about 40 museums, tourist bus madrid vision, attraction park, zoo, etc etc. So it depends on your interests and how many you want to see.
planning your days will help you determine if needed vs pricing.

Re: Madrid Card/Tourist Travel Pass? Posted: Fri May 29, 2009 06:08 PM UTC
Thanks once again Pedro. For museums and such I think that I will be eligible for the Senior discount (over 60) even though I am not from an EU country?
The Madrid card will probably have more things I won't do, than things I will do...
The bono (or abono?) card seems more reasonable. Is it good for the airport to city ride? That is still Zone A?

if you show an id even a discount id from your country they might honor it. I know my parents did it France/Spain with no problems ,and theirs was from the USA.

LOL - I'd like to see them reading a senior's discount card in Hebrew LOL!!!
Actually I thought that my passport would be proof enough - it does have one's birth date on it.

great idea of the book of questions, etc, it will be part of the trip! great I am in it ;;;hehehehe ::)
yes try the passport, cant tell, but you never know, and its free for trying. My parents used to carry their insurance card which had a picture and birthday on it,so we told them it was from the social security administration (govt) it worked...

You most definitely are in it - one of the top contributors!
Funny - using an insurance card as a 'social security' card!
But if it is based on age and not on EU citizenship, then really it does seem to me that the passport should be best.
I have some Senior ID cards for various places but they are all in Hebrew and don't have photos. I doubt they would be effective.

yes a different insurance card....told them was from the government social security . Always worked, and it was in English. NOw you can try the passport if you think that will show better.

UnaS , we meet again! When will you be in Madrid for a week? Your question on the travel card was most useful. I was wondering the same thing (if there was a T10 equivalent in Madrid). Mazaltov on the birth of your grandsons ( I saw their photos on your home page)

Hi Cheryl,
That is what happens on VT when you are planning a trip to the same place :)
I expect to be in Madrid at the end of September, beginning of October.
Hoping to arrange a small Meet there with some local VT Madridlenos and other visitors.
Will you be there about the same time?
