We will be walking mont blanc classic walk late august. We arrive saturday afternoon, and begin the walk monday morning, returning the following sunday afternoon. My question is what is the best way to get from chamonix to milan on the monday? Can I purchase tickets for bus/train on the preceding sunday?
Thank you for your time

On option to get from Chamonix to Milano is to take the bus across to Pre st. Didier or Aosta in Italy and take a train from there. Best inquire about the bus in Chamonix itself, and I'm sure you can buy tickets somewhere (often even from the busdriver upon departure). For the train tickets in Italy it is not necessary to buy them in advance. Just get them from the ticket window or a vending machine at the station when you get there. (The best place to find out about times is, as always, the German Railways' website www.bahn.de)

Another, quite interesting option is to take the mountain railway across to Martigny in Switzerland. From there you can take a train to Milano (sometimes even without changes). This is often even faster than going via Aosta, but will be more expensive. Schedules you can find on the above mentioned website, tickets you can buy at the station in Chamonix up to the point your train leaves...

Those are all good suggestions. The tickets for buses from Chamonix to Aosta can be purchased at the ticket agent for the Italian SAVDA bus line located in the SAT bus kiosk, which is a small wooden hut just outside at the Chamonix main SNCF train station.

This is also the place where the bus arrives to pick you up. As far as I know they no longer let the bus driver sell tickets and have signs up now saying to have your ticket to get onto the bus. The bus schedules are here: http://www.savda.it/orari_tariffe.htm

thank you both for your replies. I think the train via martigney sounds nice, though cant find an idea of comparable costs on the internet. I suppose i will just work it out when i get there, great suggestions and gives me an idea on what is going on there. cheers
