Bosnia and Herzegovina From Melbourne, Australia to Sarajevo, B&H
Posted: Tue May 26, 2009 08:50 PM UTC
I am hoping to do this trip next May.

I really hate flying so want to do it as little as possible.

Could someone advise me what kind of place in Europe would be the quickest flight - I only want the one necessary stopover to refuel.

Then if it is say, Frankfurt, I would spend a few days there, and find the easiest way by land to get to Sarajevo.

But maybe I should also consider not only the quickest flight, but also how easy it is to get to Sarajevo.

As long as there is only one stopover. A few hours in the plane don't really matter.

Thank you if you have got any advice or tips.

The cheapest looks like a ticket on Turkish Airlines via Hong Kong and Istanbul.
MEL - HKG on Cathay
HKG - IST on Turkish (operated by Jet Airways)
IST - SJJ on Turkish

Long layovers HKG and IST outbound and IST inbound.

Other airlines cost about the double.

Overland from Frankfurt takes about 22 hours by train and 24+ hours by bus.

Best might be to look for flights into Dubrovnic as they are doing a lot of tourist business - and the bus ride from there into Bosnia is a good one - if you go during the daylight hours. You can also go from Venice overland by bus and train - or via ferry from Italy. - Rod

i've done the bus ride from dubrovnik to sarajevo - very pleasant and easy

but i suppose i am looking for the nearest big european hub

i have been fooling around on zuji and at the moment it seems to be Vienna

i found a cheap flight via HK to Vienna

budapest is closer but i don't think this is a one stopover flight from australia

Change sales city to MEL to get prices in AUD. You can only find flights that are maximum 330 days in the future.

I would say Melbourne-Hong Kong-Vienna is probably about as good as it's going to get. Vienna's a lot closer to Sarajevo than Frankfurt is. Looks like there are 2 daily buses, both leaving at 1800 and taking about 12-13 hours. Train via Budapest might be more fun and definitely more comfortable if a little longer - 14 hours, leave at 7am-ish and arrive at 9pm

From Vienna take a river trip to Bratislava - pocket-sized old city centre, historic, very cute. Hydrofoil down the Danube to get there, stay a night or two and continue down river to Budapest (great city) - lovely scenery along the way

You could end up overdosing on Austro-Hungarian history on a trip to this corner of Europe - and don't even think about watching the calories.

Personally I'd chech the option suggested by HansDK - and use the opportunity to spend a couple of days in Istanbul. It is such an amazing place and offers all sorts of accomodation options. There are 2 direct flight/day between Istanbul and Sarajevo, both should be reasonably priced, Turkish Airlines and BH airlines. You can practice your shimmy-shimmy and camel walk there, you know.

When trying to plan my multi-legged journeys I usually start on a website of the destination airport, which gives me an idea from where I can try to connect.

Then I try my luck on amadeus.net

Oh, and I know of some interesting places between Vienna and Sarajevo, too. Too bad you can't stand driving in a car faster than a mule.
