Is there public transportation? If cab is the only option, what is approximate fare?

You can take the "El" train ORANGE LINE from Midway Airport. Take the ORANGE LINE until the Harold Washington Library Exit. Transfer there to the BLUE LINE (direction toward Forest Park) and take that several stops to Clinton. Walk 2 blocks north and you are at Union Station.

There is no direct "El" Train from Midway to Union Station so if you have a lot of luggage the cab would be your best bet.

Here is a link showing you a map of what I just described. http://www.transitchicago.com/assets/1/clickable_system_map/200806D.htm

When I've done this, I've taken the Orange Line to Quincy/Wells and walked west on Adams. There's more foot traffic on those streets and you don't have to transfer.
One-way fare is $2.25. There are ticket machines as you walk out of Midway: http://www.transitchicago.com/travel_information/fares/default.aspx

Excellent tips so far. One thing I'd like to add is that you must have sufficient American currency available. You feed bills and change into a machine and then the value of this money is electronically added to the magnetic strip of a CTA card.

There's no problem with adding more money. There should be a person on duty in case the smallest thing you have is a $20 bill, for example.

Great local "EL" elevated trains! They go right from the airport into the city so there's a stop a few blocks from the train station. Be aware that the trains often run late coming from the East into Chicago.
