September happenings Posted: Tue May 26, 2009 01:41 PM UTC
Hello!
I'm going to visit a friend of mine in Italy in September and want to also visit Valencia. Are there any festivals or other special events going on? I don't know yet if I'm going to visit Italy or Spain first, so any information will be very helpful.
Thanks!

Near Valencia, La Tomantina Festival is held the last Wednesday in August - that is the huge tomato throwing festival. If you can work that in to your plans, I recommend it

Unfortunately I'll either still be in Iraq or on my way back to the States... whenever we touch ground, we'll have four days off, and then we'll have our reintegration classes, and then be free to go on leave.
But thank you for the suggestion. Maybe on future visits!

I wouldn't waste your time visiting Valencia - its a building site - and a small one at that! The only thing worth visiting is the indoor food market

Hmm... I've been reading quite a bit about it; I kind of like the idea of having a beach area close to the city, and it sounds like there's a little bit more to see than just the indoor market.
But thanks for the suggestion. Do you tell that to everyone who posts in the Valencia forum?

Allison,
Valencia is a fantastic city, I was there for a few days last October and didn’t have nearly enough time to see everything. The old city is compact and easy to walk around. There are lots of churches, art galleries and museums to see. Some lovely squares too, Plaza de la Virgin behind the cathedral is a great place to sit out in and watch the world go by in the evening. The cathedral, its own museum and the tower within are all worthwhile. The so-called ‘Holy Grail’ is stored in a chapel within the cathedral, believe what you like yourself! The new city of Arts and Sciences is a bus ride away (or you could walk down through the Turia Gardens) and is an amazing contrast to the old city – it’s like another world. Even if you don’t visit any of the buildings they are worth a look and the photo opportunities are abundant. Then there’s the beaches and the port… I will definitely be back! You’ll have a great time – if you can tear yourself away from Italy. AM

Thank you... I love cities, like St. Augustine, Fla., and Mexico City, that have a mix of old and new culture. Both have heavy Spanish influences too, so I think I'll enjoy Valencia.
I think I'll be okay without any festivals... I was mostly just checking for scheduling purposes. I didn't want to be in Europe and miss something by a few days!
