This is nothing important,I just got curious. My parents are at Berlin, and my mother send a sms last night about some big day there. She allways write everything so short (in sms),so it was like"big day today, festival,Germany 60".I donīt belive, that Germany is 60 years old :D So I tried to find whit google what she ment, but I found nothing. What festival-day it was?

You mean 24th May?

It was the 60th anniversary of "The Federal Republic of Germany".

Not Germany, but the Federal Republik of Germany.
60 years ago the Grundgesetz (Basic Law / Constitution) took effect.

a few "German birthdays"
German Empire
18. Jan 1871 proclamation in Versailles

Weimar Republic
9. Nov. 1918 November revolution
11. Aug. 1919 proclamation of the constitution

Third Reich
23. March 1933 Enabling Act of 1933

Federal Republic of Germany
23. May 1949 proclamation of the German Basic Law (as new constitution)

and that we do not run of reasons to celebrate:
9. Nov. 1989 fall of the Wall

The Holy Roman Empire (911-1806) is not seen as a national state in the modern sense. Thus Germany as a national state is really just 140 years old. The HRE included also till its end the today countries of: Austria, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein.

Oops. No celebrations that day, and for some quite good reason. The fall of the wall is celebrated on Oct 3rd, German Unity Day.

... will still be celebrated this year with a "Festival of Freedom" from 7.-9. Nov. 2009. In a rather big way.

I was little surprized about that celebration also. They had seen some adds. They come back in two days,I will ask them if there was that celebration or not.
At least they had been at some concert. My father was so excaited to tell how he fly in the balloon.Or what what it is in English.I think youīll understand anyway ;)
