Belize Arranging tours in Belize
Posted: Fri May 22, 2009 05:16 AM UTC
Hi all,

My husband-to-be and I are going to Belize for our honeymoon in early September. I was wondering if we should try to sign up for tours to places like Tikal, Xunantunich, diving/snorkeling, and so on, ahead of time from the States (by internet), or arrange them once we get there. Is there a difference in price either way? We plan to spend a few days in Ambergris, in San Ignacio, and maybe elsewhere, and use them as basepoints for day excursions.

Do you have particular tour operators that you have been happy with?

One final question: What can we expect in terms of weather for the last week of August/first week of September? I heard it is rainy, does that mean low incidence of sun?

Thanks so much for your replies in advance!

Hi! We stayed in Caye Caulker last February and it was very easy to book tours on the spot - we'd usually take a look at the weather forecast and book our tours one day or two ahead of time. Hotels are usually good at recommending the best tour operators. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding, hope you have a great time in Belize!

My husband and I went to Belize last year. We wanted to see a lot of things but also enjoy ourselves. We spent time along the coast and about 6 days in the Cayo region. We really lucked out by deciding to stay ay Mopan River Resort. The price may seem high but it included all meals, beverages Including alcoholic and tours (border crossing to Tikal in Guat. is extra). Lunches are provided when a tour occurs during lunch. The canaņas are wonderful as is everthing there. You might want to check the out. Enjoy your trip!! Su

You can book your tours 1 or 2 days in advance once you are there. Best to look at the weather forecast for the next day or two and then decide what you feel like doing. I just came back from San Ignacio and San Pedro last week. The ruins in Cayo are spectacular. Stay in San Pedro town on Ambergris Caye to fully enjoy all the caye has to offer.

You are booking during hurricane season so check-out the NOAA website for tropical storm development closer to your departure time. hope this helps.

We were in Belize last August and it was hot and humid. It rained daily but only for 15 minutes or so. We stayed near San Ignacio and it cools down wonderfully at night, WE had lots of sunshine, river tubing is a must at Jaguars Paw, also zip lining , if you want to go to Xunantunich, you can just go and there are tour guides there, we paid about $25 usd for the tour, there were 3 of us, way cheaper then an organized tour, we didn't make it to Tikal :( but next time for sure.
Have a great time!!!!

howdy.
i have been to belize a dozen times, i urge to to concider useing the Belcove hotel,[belcove.com]in Belize city as your base, ask for room 32[i think] its upstairs ,nice bath, very cosy, very clean very safe.Belize city is the center of the country,so easy to get to San Ignicio, easy to get to San Padro, very easy for day trips everywhere like caye caulker, [highly recamend a day at the split] just get on the water taxi in Belize city [about 140ft from the hotel, with your towels tucked under your arm and head straight to "the split",on caye caulker, rent a kayak from Chocolet [ask around, everybody knows him, then ask him to take you to see the manatees the next day your there, will be highlight of whole trip] or paddle your kayak out to the reef, must see.
was in Belize last Sept, in Belize city they set up a carnival, ferris wheel, beer gardens,in a local park, parads throught the city, for the countrys Independance day, e mail the hotel, ask them about tour options ,they will book you tickets. probley no need for any advance booking, i was there for two weeks, no rain at all very few tourists.
anywhere you want to go, can be booked at the hotel, they even pick you up at the airport for $20.us. try San Pedro for a day, kind of a tourist trap, but wont be a bad day, find someone to take you croc hunting, try caye caulker for a couple days, about 15.us for round trip,go a couple days in a row, must have Chocolet take you out to swim WITH the manatees, there is nothing in corazal, dont bother. dont get into some raty old taxis, only CALL a cab when you need one, A taxi driver i trust completely is Gerald lewis at 621-4675 local number.he spends his day parked at the water taxi terminal .get him to take you to "old belize" for a day, a resort, bring your swim trunks, nice place for a day. you must see the mayan site Alton Ha for a day, Gerald will drive you out, spend half a day waiting for you then take you to the zoo for the rest of the day, so you can get a driver, car, tour guide for a whole day for a couple hundred bucks, or take a tour bus to each place.
tell Gerald Gordo sent you.
one more thing, for a nice dinner, try the poolside bar at the raddisson hotel, a five minute walk from the belcove, maybe its safer to take a taxi the few blocks back, taxis at the raddisson front door are pretty safe, useual charge to go 5 blocks back to the hotel is $5.us, i allways give then ten, i never try getting a better price from a poor driver, i allways give them double.
have fun Gordo
