Single travelling, koh samui/koh phangan advice?! Posted: Thu May 21, 2009 10:13 PM UTC
I am a single female travelling to Koh Samui for a few weeks at the beginning of July...i'm after any advice anyone can give me really! Where is best to stay? Somewhere cheap, friendly (possibly to meet some like-minded people!) and by the beach. A lot of places seem to be set up for familes/couples and i'd rather meet other groups/single travellers.
I would love to take a dive course out there however have been told Koh Phangan may be best for this...there is a full moon party on the 9th July which i could combine for a few days before heading back to Koh Samui (is there a ferry??). What are people thoughts??!
I'm open to any suggestions.
Thank you :)

Best bet is stay somewhere for one or two nights, get to know your surroundings and go from there and see who you meet along the way and see where they hang out.
Getting a ferry to Koh Phangan is not a problem many places will sell you tickets and pick you are at hotel or travel agents where you buy ticket from.
You will meet lots of single travellers like yourself in Koh Phangan it's very much a party Island. But be aware of the people you meet at the party including travellers. I never saw any police on the Island when I was there but it wasn't full moon party time.
Hadrin beach is the place to go on Koh Phangan plenty of cheap Accommodation.
Enjoy the Party.

Hi,
koh phangan can be fun during full moon and quiet before and after. The island remains undevlopped. I was there last year and I might return it in July just for a few days. There is a very good tatoo shop!. I try to avoid Koh Samui which is not worth your money. Too touristic, expensive, dusty and noisy. Of course, this is my personal vision.
Actually, I am a French living in Asia and I am looking for someone who wish to accompagny me and discover other island in the west coast of Thailand FROM 1ST jULY TO 15TH. Anyone here?

I am sorry to say that I have to disagree with the Frenchman's opinion of Samui. It very much depends on where you stay, what your tastes are and so on. I am assuming you are a young(er) person and would like to do the beach and night life bit. These are in abundance on Ko Samui and the people (Thai) are incredibly friendly. You can get a variety of accommodation from hotels to house rental. Personally I would go down the house rental route which will probably give you greater value for your money. If you need any help in finding reasonable quality and safe places, please e-mail us on robertson468@hotmail.com and we would be delighted to recommend some places to you. Incidentally we are not agents, only people who live and enjoy the lovely Island of Samui. As for Diving, my wife had her own Tour Company and has quite a few contacts and would be more than happy to help. We also have a friend who runs a Dive Company on Ko Tao who would be delighted to help. Hope you find everything you are looking for and I am sure you will have a great time on Samui.

Currently it is a very quiet season over here. So, staying in Koh Phangan (other than during the full moon period) will be extremely quiet. I would recommend that you stay in Chaweng area as that would give you access to most type of activities easily.
You can try P&P hotel. Currently they offer from 700 baht per room per night upwards. They have 3 sections - nearest to the road is the cheapest and nearest to the beach is 1,000 baht per night. I have friends who are staying there and they are very happy with the location and hotel.
For diving, the best place is Koh Tao. But you can make your bookings while you are in Samui. And there will be daily ferries to Koh Phangan from Samui - even for the full moon party. Many people do not stay overnight.
In Samui, if you are staying in Chaweng, your night area would be Soi Green Mango where all the clubs are. While many of the bars offer bar-girls, there are a few that do not. If you like more information on the bars located there or activities to do, please email me at judy.khoo@gmail.com.
