Re: From Vancouver to the Candian Rockies & back in 10 days Posted: Sun May 24, 2009 04:49 AM UTC
Yes, 10 days is enough time, although you'll be travelling something like 1600 km return, so hopefully your family is up to a few days with fairly big miles. You might consider driving to Kamloops the first day (~4 hours from Vcr), then take the Yellowhead highway north to Jasper. Spend 3-5 days in Jasper, visiting Miette Hot Springs, Maligne Lake, Mt. Edith Cavell as separate day trips. Then drive the Icefields Parkway south to Lake Louise. Would be nice to spend one night on the Parkway. Most accomodation, other than hostels, is quite expensive, but Saskatchewan River Crossing Resort is relatively inexpensive. (Icefields Chalet, Num-Ti_Jah Lodge are more expensive). Worth it to spend one night at Lake Louise, or stay in nearby Yoho National Park. Don't worry if you don't get to Banff. Then head back to Vancouver via the Trans-Canada. En route, Revelstoke has a very interesting Railway museum and free tours of the Revelstoke Dam. Salmon Arm and Sorrento have beaches on beautiful Shuswap Lake.
