There are quite a few separate sections of the Great Wall to explore. For example, Badaling, Mutianyu, Simatai, Jinshanling, etc etc. You really have to research which one you want to explore since each one would take up a greater part of your day to get to and return from, including the visit. The most popular but heavily-touristed section (I think) is Badaling. There is a public bus to get there, since that's how I got there. I can't recall which one it was, but the bus stop in Beijing was in the northwest of the city. Most hotel staff can direct you how to get to the bus stop. Also, if you google BADALING section, you will likely find your answer on one of those pages.

I don't mean to be offensive, but it would be good if you could do a little bit of homework on your own -- Google works wonders, sometimes. You're asking to be spoonfed without even knowing what you want to eat!

Hi!

I understand that its a little bit confusing when faced with different sections of the Wall and how they differ from each other when you've never been here so I'll try and help you out a little. From the descriptions below you could then do some of your own research to see which one you would prefer visiting.

My 'Beijing' page and 'Beijing Shi' page have the same info so it doesnt matter which one you go to, but basically you can find out how to go to:

Badaling section(most touristy) under my Tourist Trap section:
http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/2c4ea/5bf/7/

Mutianyu section (a wilder part of the Wall further away (may favourite)) under my Transportation section:
http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/2c4ea/5bf/9/

I haven't written a tip for the Simatai section as I have not been there yet!

Hope this helps!

That should read Mutianyu is 'MY' favourite not 'May' favourite...although Im sure it is beautiful in May too! Ha ha!

I'm actually doing some research on how to get to Simatai using public bus as my boyfriend's parents are arriving this weekend and they want to go, so I will add it as a tip by the end of the week if you want to check back to my transportation tips another time! I do know that you need to catch a 2-3 hour bus which will drop you off in a town close to the Wall and from there you'll need to take a minivan (bargain the price) to the actual Wall...so it's a long trip and that section is the most wild of them all (crumbling walls and lots of wild vegetation).

The Greate Wall where the tourist goes generally is the Badaling Greate Wall. You can go to the Beijing train north station (Near the Xizhimen). Then buy one ticket (14 yuan) to the Badaling. It needs your hours to the Badaling train station. When arrive, go out of the Badaling train station. Turn left and go through one km, you will see the Greate Wall.

You have different choices. For most travellers,Badaling is a nice choice as it is the most famous section of the great wall but surely you will meet a lot of trevellers. You can take bus NO919(fast) at Deshengmen directly to Badaling.Still there are other sectiions such as Mutianyu,Simatai,Jinshanling. But if you have enough time and prefer exploring the real great wall,I recommend Jiankou Section

hello, i didn't post this question, but was wondering the same thing as the original poster. thanks for all the info. when i was in beijing, i looked for a bus, but couldn't find one, and ended up taking an overpriced tour which included quite a few things i was not interested in. the train tip is also a good one, may check into that option, as i'm headed back to beijing again at the end of this month (july). thanks to all!

The train goes to Badaling which's also the most touristy. If you're not keen on that, then you might need to reconsider.
