Vienna HELP IN SELECTING A HOTEL AND TRANSPORTATION IN VIENNA
Posted: Tue May 19, 2009 05:08 AM UTC
I and my wife will be in Vienna for two days. We will arrive at Vienna airport at about 11 am on a Saturday and leave at about 11 am on Monday after a stay of about 48 hours. We would like to stay in a three / four star hotel (say about 100 odd euros per night). However, we feel that in case the hotel is near a railway station (say upto a Km or so) which is connected to the airport, we will be able to go by train from the airport and easily lug our suitcases ourselves. Thereafter we should be able to move around easily in public transport.
We will be grateful for the following advise:-
(a) Hotels that meet our requirement.
(b) What transportation pass should we buy so that we can not only travel beween airport / hotel and back but also thereafter be able to move around easily within the city in the available modes of transportation.

The ticket we used when visiting Vienna was the 72-hour ticket that we purchased at the airport (I think, if not there then at any given subway station). It cost us 13.60€ as of 2008. I don't think they have a 48-hour card but maybe you could either buy the 72-hour one or 2 24-hour cards?

Here's the link to Wiener Linien, the transport company in Vienna: http://www.wienerlinien.at/wl/ep/programView.do?programId=9106 - if that doesn't work, then go to www.wienerlinien.at and then click on "English" at the top right corner.

Hope it helps.

There is an 48-hours ticket for Vienna´s public lines available, too. It costs 10 Euros per person and it is a rover ticket for all public lines in Vienna valid for 48 hours from your first ride with S-Bahn, underground, bus or tram. You have to stamp this ticket before your first ride. This ticket does not include the whole ride from the aiport to Wien-Mitte by S-Bahn S8! For this ride you need one additional single-ticket per person which costs 1,70 Euros. Regular shuttle-busses are available from the airport to the train stations Suedbahnhof and Westbahnhof and to the city center. For these busses an extra ticket - 6 Euros per person and ride - is necessary, can be purchased on the bus, schedule: http://www.viennaairportlines.at
