S-Bahn ticket Posted: Sun May 17, 2009 07:09 PM UTC
Hi again!
We have to go from the airport to Alser underground station by S-Bahn. Somebody told there is the possibility to buy a combined ticket for airport and underground which costs 3,40 Euros. Can anybody explain me how to buy this kind of ticket on the machines at the airport?
Thanks a lot.

Take the S8 to "Handelskai", than change for the U6 to Alser Straße.
EUR 3.40 is correct. If I recall correctly, the ticket is called "Einzelfahrschein".

You actually need 2 Einzelfahrschein(e) AND you have to cancel them BOTH in the moment you start your journey at the airport. They are 1,70 each and one of them is for that part that is OUTside of Vienna (just 1 station: Schwechat airport to Schwechat)and the otherone is for a single ride to any place in Vienna as long as you go there directely or by changing trams/buses/S-bahn/Metros,always catching the next possible one and taking the more or less direct way.
You could also combine a single Einzelfahrschein (for the bit of the journey OUTside of Vienna) with a 24 or 72hour ticket in the so-called Zone 100 and also in this case cancell BOTH tickets before you enter the S-bahn.
S-bahn in Vienna and at the airport always has ticketmachines, they will also take bills of 10 and 20 euro and give change and maybe they print out a single ticket for 3,40 instead of 2x Einzelfahrschein, but both is possible.
In general S-bahn will have a machine to cancell the ticket ONLY OUTside of the train, BEFORE you enter it, same system is also for metro in Vienna !
Trams and buses have the cancellation-machines INside the wagon, so you can do that also there.
But you start with the S-bahn, so once that your ticket is cancelled there it stays valid for 1,5 hours into the same direction also in trams, metros etc.

Thank you for answer Turtleshell and Globetrott.
Globetrott you seem to know well the system. We are thinking of buying the 8 Day travel card (27,20 Euros)(valid for 2 people, 1 strip -1 day-1 person). Do you know if it is possible to combine a single Einzelfahrschein (for the bit of the journey OUTside of Vienna) with this 8 Day travel card? Which would be the total price for this combination? Can I buy them at the airport machines?
Thanks in advance.

8day travelcard is a very good solution and of course you can use it for the part in the zone100 and add a single Einzelfahrschein for the first part that is outside of zone100, when coming from the airport.
Also in this case, cancell 1 strip of the 8daycard plus the Einzelfahrschein BOTH at the airport, before you enter the train !
8daysticket should be available in the machine at the airport
you always start such a ticket by using strip #1 (you have to bend it strip by strip, before putting it into the machine) In case that you start with strip #8 it means that the ticket is used for 8 people travelling togeather the same day...
8daycard starts any time of the day and ends shortly after midnight, when the last trams, metros etc. will go.
then at night we have NIGHT-buses like N6, going the almost same way as tram6.
You may use them by a Einzelfahrschein or when it is still within the 24 hours of a 24hour ticket etc.
For the 8dayticket of yesterday it is too late, that ended before 01.00am in most cases, BUT when you start your next day (your next strip of the 8daycard) already at lets say 02.00am with a new strip of your 8dayticket the ticket is fine for the nightbus plus for the full day and it will end again shortly after midnight, when the last trams of that day will go to sleep.

Thank you Globetrott, you are giving us a lot of information.
In your above reply there is something confusing for us: the way to use the 8 day travel card. We are 2 people tavelling together. You say: "you always start such a ticket by using strip #1 (you have to bend it strip by strip, before putting it into the machine". So, in our first use, as we are 2 people, we put strip #2 into the machine first, the machine punch it and then we put strip #1 to punch it or we must cut the strip before putting the machine? Why do you say to bend it?
I'm sure it will be easier to do than to explain because we are making a mess.
What does the machine do: print something in the strip o make a hole in it?
Sorry for so many questions and thanks again.

Re: S-Bahn ticket Posted: Sun May 24, 2009 06:01 PM UTC
sorry for the delay, I had a few days off to travel... ;-)
the card has 8 fields, one above the other on bottom is #1 on top is #8.
you simply bend that paper between #1 and #2 so, when you feed it into the canecllation-machine you get the stamp on #1.
For the 2nd person you do it with #2 as well, so you can travel that day togeather on that same ticket.
