We are looking at staying in this area but am getting somewhat nervous. Has anyone stayed there? Is it safe? I understand about taxi's at night but is the general area safe. Can't get a real sense from google maps or anything else. Renter is telling us it is safe.

That's Marigny. Somewhat of a transitional neighborhood but generally safe. If you keep your wits about you and not walk back from the French Quarter too late, then you should be fine.
