Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Porto Pre-purchase train tickets?
Posted: Sat May 16, 2009 07:43 PM UTC
OK, this has to be one of the silliest questions in the forum. I have to catch a couple of tight train connections, and I usually prefer having my tickets bought ahead of time. Is there any reason why I should *not* pre-purchase?

I've been holding off in case of changes, but now - !!! - the trip is here.

They're early tickets and sometimes the station cashiers don't open in time, plus I don't care to fumble thru the ticket counter if I'm sure where I'm going.

Any thoughts?

Not talking about Cascais tickets, referring to Porto - Pinhao - Lisbon tickets.

The only "problem" I can see, is in case you miss the train, I don't know if you can get the money back or changing it for the next train (with or without penaly). You may ask them just in case: www.cp.pt.

This is my last experience: I wanted to catch a train at a given time, but it all depended on my flight arrival time, the metro and so on, so, I decided to run the risk. Fortunately i took the metro when it was about the live (Porto airport), I arrived at Campanha station on time, I went to the ticket office, and bought the ticket just a few minutes before departure.

Porto - Pinhao trains are 'unreserved' local trains so you cannot purchase tickets in advance through the website.

Reservations are advised for Porto - Lisbon trains and you can do so a maximum of 30 days before travel. I have just purchased on-line tickets for two Albufeira- Lisbon and Lisbon - Porto journeys. At the bottom of the ticket is a statement concerning refund conditions.

Thanks Santi and cubsur. I know that in Germany, when I missed a train they just put me in the next one without charge, but I don't know if it will work the same.

I need to take the early (around 7 am) from Porto to Pinhao, then I need to go from Pinhao to Lisbon. I think I'll get back on the site and see what I can buy now, as I leave in *less* than a week.

If you are sure to catch the train at that time, buy the tickets the day before or so to avoid lines
