Cape Town Taxis v minibus taxis
Posted: Sat May 16, 2009 04:30 PM UTC
I will be staying in CT next week (hotel 10 mins walk from V & A waterfront). I want to go up Table Mtn on the cable car. What is the best way to bet to the Cable Car station? Is it walkable? How much would a taxi be? Could I flag one down on the street? Are minibus taxis safe/accessible? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated asap due to close dep. date. Thanx.
PS Has anyone done the abseiling from Table Mt? What's it like?

You could use the municipal "Golden Arrow" buses

The cable car station is 6km from the Waterfront and a climb of 300 meters

You could phone for a metered taxi (can't be hailed in the street) or get one from the taxi rank in the V&A Waterfront.

You could use the sightseeing bus that leaves from the Waterfront.
http://www.citysightseeing.co.za/ (the photo on the front page has the bus near the cable station - the Waterfront is at the most distant background)

Or you could use the minibus taxis if there is already a couple of lady passengers in them. Within the central city it is a fairly safe thing for backpackers to do.

(Mini-bus taxis and Golden Arrow buses stop 1 km from the cableway station)

Best to ask your hosts or the tourist info office at the Waterfront.

taxis from the waterfront meter taxi rank can be horrendously overpriced though. if you dont mind sharing a taxi, you could get a Rikki (shared cabs that charge a set price - for that distance it would probably be around R30) their number is 021745547 - thats what id do!

I would rather use the transport provided by the hotels. They would have a shuttle service for Table Mountain.
Avoid the mini-bus taxi.

hello,
We'll be staying in Cape Town next week too. Arriving on the 21st and leaving on the 24th - driving around the Cape Peninsula en route to Hermanus. We're planning on going to the Cable Car as well on either the 22nd or 23rd, depending on the weather. We'll have a rental car. If you'd like to catch a ride, we're staying right next to the V&A Waterfront (near the Aquarium) we'll be happy to give you a ride. (by the way, we're 2 females, early 30's from NY and Boston). You can email me on here if you'd like a ride.
Happy Travels!

klmousseau.

Thank you so much for your kind offer of a lift. Regrettably, I arrive in CT on the 25th so we do not overlap. The responses on this forum have been excellent! Thank you everyone for your replies.

The sight seeing bus goes right to the Cable way so it is a good means of getting there as well as having a look around Cape Town at the same time.
