| Milford Sound | Milford sound - reservation Posted: Thu November 20, 2003 10:52 AM UTC
Hi,
me and Tom are going to see New Zeland. We are planning to stay there 6 weeks (from February 14 till March 28). We really want to see the most beautiful track – Milford. The best time for this track is from February 24 till March 20. Does anyone have any ideas who we should contact for reservation (or is there a website) ? How much it cost? We are able to pay it by CC asap. Many thanks. Jana |

Try this site, click on Explore on it's homepage:
http://www.doc.govt.nz/index.html More than likely the Milford track is booked up. But see how you go. There are two systems to walk it. One you walk yourself and carry bedding and your own food and cooling utensils. Second way you get to sleep in cabins with bedding suppplied and they supply meals as well. the second way costs substantially more. Pam.

If you find that the Milford is booked out head to the Kepler Track! It is a really good walk, and can be done in 3 days or 4 days.
Have Fun.

Hey Jana,
I agree with kiwi and mountainpoet's answers. The Milford books out very early in the season. The Kepler is good. I did it at school (Southland Girls' High) when I was 15 yrs old. The Kepler Track (in Fiordland National Park) is a circuit track starting 5km from Te Anau. You will be there in summer which is better, as ice/snow annually cause the alpine bit of the track to close. It is usually ok by December/January. During the summer, the 3 huts are provided with heating, gas for cooking, mattresses, running water and flush toilets. A hut warden is there and you must show them your pre-purchased hut ticket. 2004 prices and conditions are available at http://www.doc.govt.nz/Explore/002~Tracks-and-Walk They say on this page that "Bookings may be made to the address below by post, fax, email or phone" and then you pick up the tickets when you get there. Good luck with your travels, Bec

Jana, you are very welcome. I hope you both enjoy your visit, and that you do get to experience one of these walks.
Pam.
