Re: Dachau camp and Residenz in one day Posted: Fri May 15, 2009 02:54 AM UTC
greetings from across the hudson - yes you can do both in one day but it will be a reasonably full day. from the main train station to the residenz is two subways with one change, but only about four stops total. get out to dachau by nine or so in morning, be back in town by half past twelve for a quick lunch near marienplatz, then for a total immersion in the residenz figure two to three hours including the treasury ( worth every penny of the extra fee ). you can get thru the residenz in less time, but there is so much that we spent almost the full three hours. i have a page on dachau and several things to do tips on the residenz on the munich page which may be of value.

Re: Dachau camp and Residenz in one day Posted: Fri May 15, 2009 03:03 AM UTC
Hi,
I think that's fine. Munich to Dachau with the S-Bahn might take you about 20 min, maybe faster to take a train from munich main station. This may take 10 min. I actually don't know when these two places open and close, but I would start with Dachau and go back to munich at about 2 pm.
Please don't give too much on my answers since I'm from Munich and therefore not too familiar with these sights. As for many people I've been around the world but not around my homecity. :-(

Additional info:
You have to calculate with 40 minutes travel time from Hauptbahnhof to the concentration camp, depending on which kind of train you use.
S 2 (train/S-Bahn, direction Dachau/Peterhausen) takes 25 minutes, from Dachau S-Bahn station bus # 726 (direction Staubachsiedlung) takes another 10 min to the conc. camp.
The DB (German Railways) train (direction Ingolstadt) in fact needs only 11 minutes - and the trains operating on this line are included in the ticketing system of S-Bahn, so you do not have to pay extra for the bus trip.
You can check S-Bahn and trains on www.bahn.de
and on http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/
I checked out when you have to start if you want to be at the KZ Gedenkstätte at about 9 am:
by S-Bahn at 8:09am, arrival 8:48am
by train (railway) at 8.29am, arrival 9:08am
As you see, travel time is always 39 minutes because of the bus schedule.
You have a train every hour, S-Bahn every 20 minutes.
The KZ-Gedenkstätte opens at 9am.

Hi - I haven't been to Dachau but I agree with Lew about the time spent in the Residenz. Get there first thing in the morning so you have plenty of time to wander. Yes, do see the treasury! I'd also recommend getting the audio guide. Much more interesting than wandering on your own. Enjoy!

it is not in the center of town, but maybe 4 miles or so out, direction southwest. Should be near the U6 train

Nordfriedhof is the next U-Bahn stop from your hotel.
The Residenz is next to Odeonsplatz stop.
However close enough to S-Bahn station Marienplatz that you can go there directly on your way to Dachau.

Re: Dachau camp and Residenz in one day Posted: Fri May 15, 2009 08:14 PM UTC
it is five stops from your hotel to the residenz all on the u6 train. for the main train station, go one more stop to marienplatz on the u6 in the same direction and then take any train going west ( toward your right ) two stops and you are there.

Once back at Marienplatz, just walk to Residenz, it would be just one stop to Odeonsplatz on U3 or U6. But the walk is absolutely lovely, through a pedestrian zone, if you take the direct way, or narrow alleyways with nice shops. If you hurry it would not take you longer than 5 to 10 minutes.
