Possibly staying in Phenom Penh Posted: Thu May 14, 2009 06:30 PM UTC
Hi all,
Some buddies an I will be traveling SE Asia this Friday, but they're doing the planning. They are some "good ole boys" so I plan to have a backup just in case. Can anyone recommend a hotel within walking distance to a kick ass bar/the party section of the city? Everywhere I read indicates that the city at night can be a bit dodgy (don't know about that, Bucharest at night was pretty sketchy but incredibly cool, and I can't be more complimentary to the people). We'll probably be coming in by bus from Siem Reap so I'd be interested in a place that can arrange a transfer from the station to the hotel. Budget not a problem, prefer nicer accommodations though...I've been westernized :P
Thanks

Boat or bus from Siem Reap will see you arrive in PP in the riverfront area. Loads of bars and hotels all close enough to walk, or, at night just a short tuk-tuk ride. In March, I stayed at the Royal Inn, 10 min. walk south of the riverside bars. A very nice, clean hotel. Their website: www.royal-inn.net
You won't need to organise transportation when you arrive - the tuk-tuks will be waiting for you!

We had a recent stay and went up market(my 2nd trip to PP but 3rd to Cambodia) staying a the Blue Lime it cost us $US50 a double room with breakfast has a lovely pool and is in walking distance to the river front. It is down a short alley and is like an oasis after a day wandering around PP. there are tuk tuks out the front just waiting to take you where you want to go most rides seemed to cost us $US2 to get 4 of us from A-B.You dont pay up front but they must have an email a week before you arrive this is your confirmation if they dont get the email they assume you have cancelled they make this very clear when you email to book. They have a website. I would go back to this hotel. Try Capitol Guest House tours they arrange trips and have used them on both occasions and found them ok.

Although it is a few years since I was there I found the Walkabout Hotel to be a good option. Here is the website.
http://www.walkabouthotel.com/index.html
It is on 51st Street near a couple of good bars, although the bar in the Hotel itself is permanently open, so you don't even need to go out!
The city can be a bit dodgy but transportation on the back of a motorbike is relatively cheap and the drivers will hang about outside the hotel so they are easy to get.
Hope this assists.
fergy.

I have also stayed at Walkabout on our first trip to PP 4 ladies. Sorry but this place is nothing more than a girlie bar full of awful western men who want cheap sex I would not recomend staying there unless it is a sex holdiay you are after. We were the only women other than the bar girls there was not another female guest in the hotel other than the 4 of us. I have travelled to Thailand on many occasion I am not offended by these bars or the women what I do hate is seeing dirty old men pawing these women and that is all we saw when we stayed at Walkabout. Blue Lime and Walkabout are worlds apart.

There's a few VT members who have mentioned that the Billabong Hotel is good. VT member Cathy&Gary has a review on their PP travel pages, like-wise (from memory) JonnyVN.

City Centre Hotel would be a good option for you. It isn't right in the Sisowath Quay bar district, but it is only about a block away. It has very good security, but they won't give you a hassle if you want to bring a lady to the room. The location is also close to the central market, bus stops, and the pier for the ferry to Siem Reap. It is inexpensive, but it is a new hotel with in room amenities including free wi/fi internet, flat screen TV, coffee/tea maker, refrigerator, and good beds!
