Barbados Cruise Stop
Posted: Thu May 14, 2009 01:36 AM UTC
We are taking a cruise which stops in Barbados....any suggestions for a nice day, where we don't have to be shuffled around by tour guides etc...? Any suggestions on how to best spend our time would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Dawn

We are not big ship tour people, but we did the "Rhino Riders" off the ship and had one of the best times at a port stop. I am not sure what ship you are going on and/or what they will call that on your ship. However, it is a two person Zodiac boat, sort of like a jet ski only with more room and you sit lower and with an outboard motor, and they take you out to snorkle some minor ship wrecks. The water is awesmome, the guide was great, and it was an all around great day.

Two years later we went back for a couple of pre-cruise departure days and stayed at the Craine Hotel. We really didn't see to much of the rest of island, but in doing my research I think most other areas might be a little expensive to just hang out.

Without a tour, a cab might be expensive, but visit the Caves in the hills. Plenty of photo ops if you like that sort of thing.

Also walking tour of town. Walking into town from the port is easy. Visit the castle and if the "flea market" is operating near the port, you can get some great trinkets at good prices (at least in some stalls).

Much depends on what you really want to do. If it's only a beach, I'd suggest Accra/Rockley beach on the South coast. Nice location, places to eat, nice beach etc. if you want to explore the island or see what there is to see, you can either rent a car or, yes I'm saying it, take one of the tours from the ship, one that would give you a broad overview of the island.

If you don't want either of those, you can always walk into Bridgetown, explore the historical buildings and get an idea what a day in Bridgetown is like.

Good luck.
