Cheap eats? Posted: Wed May 13, 2009 05:39 PM UTC
Hello again! I'll be in Vancouver from Friday night until Tuesday morning with my husband. We're staying on Robson Street and would like to know some cheap/modest places to eat, all meals. We don't have a car, so places that are within walking or transit distance. We're on a more limited budget this time around. I'd really like to spend under $20 for the both of us for lunch, and have cheap breakfast, and under $30 for sure for supper, if not cheaper. I'm not that picky, so I'm open to suggestions. I'd just like to stay away from McDonald's, etc., and chains. local places would be cool. Thanks in advance.

Hi - we stayed in a hotel a few hundred feet off Robson Street. There are plenty of inexpensive restaurants on Robson - lots of ethnic places too - Indian, Chinese/Asian. You'll have no problem finding somewhere to eat. Have a great time!

There is a new authentic Mexican place on Robson at Broughton called Don Guacamoles. O'Douls on Robson is supposed to have great Eggs Benny, I wasn't overly impressed. Hon's Noodle House on Robson is inexpensive. There are great soups at Mangez Mangez at Thurlow and Melville. Denman has great restaurants also.

There is a good food court under the Pacific Center (shopping center) at 700 West Georgia Street, Vancouver with a variety of food. It has some of the chains but also some quite tasty independent operators. Hope you enjoy your stay.

Red Robin on the corner of Robson and Thurlow. Kam's on Daive it is Singaporian food, very good, if you go there, get a copy of the WestEnder newspaper, thumb through it till you come to the restaurant ads and you will find a coupon in it for Kam's clip it out and take it with you. It is for dinner only, but you will get one meal free so you can eat a nice dinner there for under $20.00 including your beverage. Most of the menu items are $10.95. Also on Denman Street, for a good inexpensive breakfast go to the "Grove", walk along Robson, turn left on Denman and walk 3 and 1/2 blocks,it is opposite Denman Mall, this restaurant has been around for years and is very good. I know I will get a lot of flack from other Vancouverites but stay away from our famous "White Spot" not good value and in my opinion the food is nothing to write home about. YVRDave suggested the new Mexican Restaurant on Robson, tried to go there last weekend and it was packed with a line up waiting to go in, mostly Mexican and South American people eating there,a great many were students, in my opinion that is a good recommendation. Also on Denman St just down from the Grove on the other side of the street is a small restaurant, I believe it is called the "Noodle House" it is excellent, homemade noodles prices around $9.95 you have to look for it, the entrance is small and has beaded curtains.

By the way, Hon's Noodle House on Robson which YVRDave suggested, ate there once and would never go back. Sorry Dave, but it's cheap but not good.

I agree with you on Hon's flavour. I have also bee told the noodle place between Robson and Alberni is also great.
Ha ha, White Spot is a once every couple months thing for memories. They should go back to being what they were 20 years ago

Thanks for the info so far! Got here last night and ended up going to Don Guacamoles without remembering it was on this thread!
Another question - any more suggestions for breakfast?
Thanks :)

Walk down Robson Street to Denman, turn left and walk 3 and 1/2 blocks across from Denman mall on the right side of the street is the Grove, it is great, good and inexpensive, you won't be disappointed. Hate to say it but to YVRDaves suggestion of the De Dutch Pancake House on Robson, ugh! Went there once would never go back, too bad we don't have an IHOP in Vancouver, I think there is still and IHOP in Richmond however, but that is a bit too far to go for Breakfast, by the way how did you like the Mexican Restaurant you went to for dinner?
