Las Vegas Limit of taking winnings home?
Posted: Wed May 13, 2009 04:59 PM UTC
Hi there,

I was just wandering that if you won a good amount of money on the slots and tables, if it happened say anything over $10,000 is there a limit you can take back home? I know that its a tricky thing and that customs would find it strange to see you carrying back big bundles of notes. So is there any advice or tips on this would be great, thanks.

I like someone with a positive outlook on life!!:) Not the norm in Vegas but should you have some great luck I would make sure to play it by the rules. Anything over $1200.00 is reported. I knew somone who won a large amount on line and had to have it wired in increments so as not to draw attention with large deposits. Go see The Beatles Love show while in Vegas..It's at the MIrage and alot of fun. Poker is good at the Wynn and also at the Mirage. You can get cheap rooms at the Wynn if you play so many hours of poker you get a poker rate. Ask when making a reservation. Awesome beds!

I was lucky enough to win $20,000 on the slots in 2006. They asked me how I wanted it and I said CASH..which they did...2 bundles of $10,000 each in $100 bills.
If you are a UK resident you dont pay any tax but if you live outside of the UK you will have 30% taken from your winnings. I live in Spain but the Customer Service girls advised me to give my sisters address(she was with me)in the UK, so no tax was stopped.
Coming home I carried that money like a baby totally unaware of any limits of cash allowed out of the country and it wasnt until we returned in 2007 that I heard over the speaker system in the Airport, that any amount over $10,000 has to be reported. Now Im not sure what happens then so it would be interesting to find out as Im back there again in June......and who knows!!!
One other point...when I did get back to my Bank they didnt want to know anything about $100 bills, they said there were too many fakes so I had to visit many Banks before I found one who would open an account for me with the dollars.

Wow! It's great that you are so confident but be aware that the planes into Vegas are real rowdy and the planes leaving are real quiet. :-))

If it's a large sum of money, I don't believe the casino gives you cash. Probably something like a cashier's check. If you do get a lot of cash, it depends on what the limit is in your country. Check your customs rules. I think going into the US you can bring up to $10,000. Good luck and have a great time!!

Las Vegas Here's what U.S. Law states
Posted: Thu May 14, 2009 11:23 PM UTC
http://germany.usembassy.gov/germany/faqs/customs.html#10

Basically, you can take any amount of money you want into or out of the U.S. HOWEVER, if this amount is $10,000 or over, you must declare it. There is NO penalty for transporting over $10,000 out of the U.S. (as long as all transactions involving the money are legal); but there are SUBSTANTIAL penalties for failure to declare it.

Oh, in case you're wondering, it's also illegal to wire transfer amounts smaller than $10,000 for the purpose of evading this requirement.

Just show the proof that you won the money at Las Vegas, and customs will most likely wish you a speedy return. Fail to declare it, and they'll seize every penny.

Thanks everyone for your advice, I guess as long as I get a receipt of my winnings (if any) and declare it going back then that should be ok.

HAHAHAH you're not going to win, I moved here they were building the Marage now they are building the 10$$$$ billion City Center. They don't build these billion$$$$ casinos on winners. Now if you get lucky and do win say $10000 odds are you will give it back before you get out of town. The Casinos know how to get it back they will give you anything you want and you will will keep gambling till you lose everything.Heres advice from someone living here and I've seen retired couples move here to retire and lose there life savings after never gambling in their life.If you get lucky and say win a big jackpot and someone has to win you will have to pay taxes then wire transfer the rest home to your bank and get to the airport and get out of town as fast as you can.If you win less than 10000 I would put it in my pocket and go home and say you brought it with you.F--k the US taxes. If your from the US they will take your SS # for jackpots over 1200.

HAAAHAA to you again, thanks for the tip kenstan. I know the feeling when you think you're on a winning streak and it is very tempting to keep on gambling. For example on the last year first night I won $300 on the slots and then a further $700 on the second night. But then again I knew when there was a time to stop and put the several hundred dollars in my wallet, and then treat myself spend it and just have a great holiday. So thinking tactifully I know the saying only lose as much as you can afford to.

Another tip, if you do happen to win 10K or more on a card game, when you walk away with the chips, don't cash out all at once. Do it in increments, like a couple K at a time. If you win, I believe(if i remember correctly) $10,000 on card games and $1000 on machines(slots) the US has to tax you...

and trust me its possible to win that much, my friends do it all the time on Poker, Black Jack and Roulette. As for me, i lose all the time!

Good Luck!!

Las Vegas CCandWater, what you state is COMPLETELY false

> that way you wouldnt have to declare, its not cash

The $10,000 "trigger" for mandatory declarations is *NOT* limited strictly to cash. It's ANY negotiable securities -- cash, checks, bonds, precious metals, stocks, etc. Plain and simple, if you enter or leave the U.S. with $10,000 or more in your possession, you MUST declare it. The fact that it is not cash is COMPLETELY irrelevent.
