package food to bring back to the US Posted: Wed May 13, 2009 03:20 PM UTC
I am looking for some package food (candy, cookies, chocalate, etc) that is worth buying in berlin to bring back home. Something that would be difficult to find in New York City or more expensive.
anyone have any recommendations?

There's a Chocolaterie directly at Gendarmenmarkt:
Fassbender & Rausch GmbH
Charlottenstraße 60
10117 Berlin
http://www.fassbender-rausch.com/
Or get some woodruff or raspberry syrup for a Berliner Weiße beer. I'm sure KaDeWe stocks them.

I believe quite fine in international standards is "Lübecker Marzipan", available in normal supermarkets (not the cheap discounters) in Germany

Michael globetrott touches on a quite important subject, check out the food import guidelines before the journey!

I have simply declared them as packaged/processed goods. No questions asked so far.

Re: package food to bring back to the US Posted: Wed May 20, 2009 01:10 AM UTC
I've just googled "Schokolade Berlin", and I got lots of useful results e.g. links to places like this: http://www.fassbender-rausch.de/ (which looks pretty upmarket to me!)
I was just going to comment on the irony of an American asking what candies to bring back from Berlin - when 60 years ago American pilots were flying DC3s round the clock into Berlin, and famously dropping candies for German children. (I was reading recently that the 60th anniversary celebrations of the airlift have just concluded.) It's a funny old world... I could conclude with a 'confectionery based' quote about the unexpected from Forrest Gump; but I think I'll resist that particular temptation!

Fassbender & Rausch *IS* pretty upmarket. Same as "in't Veld" (http://www.intveld.de) and Erich Hamann Schokoladenfabrik (Brandenburgische Straße 17, 10707 Berlin, directly at U-Konstanzer St., the shop alone is worth a visit, too) and a couple of others.
I mentioned Fassbender & Rausch, because theeir shop is located at Gendarmenmarkt.
Yes, the irony! Now that you have mentioned it ...

When I went to the States to visit my relatives I brought along some tins of German beer - cause I knew they were crazy for that. There are many different kinds and they loved the strong beer. But watch how much is possible, and it is heavy to transport. There are many different kinds of chocolate, also the German gummy bears are great - my little cousins loved them. You also might think about some canned bread, like the black bread (Pumpernickel) which is typical for Germany - if allowed some bacon. Most of the candy you also get in the states - like Storck candy (Riesen, Werther's...) or Ferrero (Kinder Schokolade, Küsschen, Mon Cherie, Rocher... Lübecker Marzipan is a good idea - but many do not like it for the special taste. I would go to good candy stores and look what might be typical for Berlin, too.
Best Chris.

How could I forget "Bonbonmacherei"? Handmade candy, cooked on open fire.
Oranienburger St. 32, just a few steps inside Heckmann Höfe (left-hand side of the New Synagogue, S-Bahn "Oranienburger Straße").
