Peru to Chile - big questions! Posted: Wed May 13, 2009 06:12 AM UTC
I am planning a visit to Easter Island which requires being in Santiago Chile (only place that flies to Easter Island). Since it may be a long time before I ever get to that wonderful part of the world again, I am trying to add Peru as well.
I thought I would fly to Lima (since airfares are very reasonable), make my way to the Cusco area, and on to Santiago.
My problem is getting from Lima (or Cusco) to Santiago.
Round trip airfares from Lima to Santiago are almost $600 for the time I need to go. The bus is very reasonable, and I like buses, however it looks like it may take as long as three days which would be problematic since time is an issue.
I am hoping someone can offer some alternatives, creative or otherwise, which would allow me to get to Santiago at a reasonable price without taking three days.
Thanks!

Hi!
Here some possible options:
1.- Did you tried using the peruvian site in spanish of Lan? http://www.lan.com/index-es-pe.html, they do not accept foreign credit cards, but you can make only a reservation and then call them to the call center and ask them to issue the ticket with your credit card, they will charge you a fee, but mostly is cheaper that the price for other countries.
The other 2 options I know that is possible to do it, however I haven't done it so I can not give you details. But maybe you can ask in Chile's forum.
2 .- You can go Lima-Tacna (frontier with Chile), by plane, cross the frontier and take another plane from Arica to Chile. (not sure how far is the frontier to Arica's airport)
3.- Or you can go half way by plane and half way by bus. You can go Lima-Tacna (frontier with Chile), by plane, cross the frontier, and then go by bus from Arica to Santiago de Chile I found this on internet, http://www.turbus.com or http://www.pullman.cl. this bus trip takes around 30 hours, Or vice versa.
Good luck :o)

Hi there, I visited Easter Island in November and thought it was wonderful! My suggestion mirrors in part what the previous poster suggested. I think you should make your way from either Cusco or Lima to Tacna (you can catch buses or fly). I flew from Tacna to Arequipa on Aerocondor and found the cost reasonable (details on my Tacna and Arequipa pages). From Tacna (in Peru) you should go overland by bus or taxi to Arica (in Chile). I did this trip in reverse and found it a much cheaper way to get between the two countries than flying. From Arica you could fly on Sky Airlines which is much cheaper than LAN. Check their website on www.skyairline.cl Please note that their website claims that promotional fares are published in chilean currency, they are only available for sale in Chile. X, Z, Q, T and R Fares are only for sale in Chile. If you are located in other country, they say you can contact skytours@skyairline.cl What you could do though is purchase your ticket once you arrive in Arica if you really want the cheaper flights.
Long distance buses in Chile are run by various companies but due to the distances they can take days. The companies are Pullman and TurBus. You can't book online so will need to go to the bus terminal in any chilean city and book there.
Kind regards, Rhianon

Thanks for letting me know nhoolb about Aerocondor. Not living in Peru I didn't know they ceased operations. I only took them a couple of years ago too. Cheers, Rhianon

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I have checked out the local airlines suggestions and their prices are definitely a lot more reasonable than the large airlines. Thanks again.
