i will be traveling to sri lanka in early june and plan to stay for a month. i will be arriveing in early june and staying in the south. is it safe to fly into colombo? is it safe to take a taxi from colombo south? what are the dangers?

Yes as safe as ever. Was there March, will be back in September, and almost daily get updates 'from the front' in a.o. Colombo reporting nothing special.

General precautions to avoid risks of terrorism, which exist in Lanka just as in e.g. London Tube, are
* Don't spend too much time in Colombo (not the airport which is 30 km to the north)
* Avoid being close to government buildings and gatherings, e.g. police buildings or election rallies
* And if you're really want extra safety, also minimise the use of public transport.

really its very safe, v dont have any problems in the capital of srilanka, here v all celebrating all the festivals and the rest, v all r havig a ver nice time,
its better to take taxy cos it will take to correct destination without any interuption like traffic or rest, also it will keep u safe and comfortable.
as u said u r goin to stay in the south so no harm, not at all.

I have been there twice in last 3 months and going again next week.

The Southern Part is very much safe and there is no danger of any kind relating to the current civil war going on in the north.

ITs very safe, we were there in November -December and again plan to go there late this year. The only areas that are not safe are North and East thats very north (jaffna) Tourists have never been bothered. And just compare although nothern ireland had issues england was very safe for the most part.

Most recently been last July-September and no problems; BUT am just reading on the news items that the REBELS have surrendered and it sounds as if the WAR IS OVER!?!? I have been travelling there for 40 yrs for extended stays and have many friends and cannot be more overjoyed!!! I would think that going there now will be MOST EXCITING with the new beginning!!

Am already here, got here as soon as I heard the war was over. Staying for 6 weeks. Safer than most countries now. This is my 6th trip, and it is wonderful!
The whole nation was celebrating the victory ! Already traveled to Kandy, Trincomalee, and the Tea Gardens in the Mountains these past few days.
