Is there any site that I can check for upcoming concerts? It would be nice if there is one that I can check for october 2009 not just the next week/month so I can order tickets in advance etc

It depends on what sort of concerts you're looking for, but, when I was up there recently and looking for shows, I found this: http://www.thebaybridged.com/local-concert-calendar/
This is for SF and mostly independent music. There's a separate calendar out there for South Bay (San Jose area) shows as well.

You might check the Events Calendar on the SF Chamber of Commerce website. They usually give a clue to concerts going on.

Finding out about these concerts ahead of time may be problematic as they are not usually scheduled so far in advance. However, getting a list of the venues offering concerts may help as they tend to advertize on their websites/offer a newsletter, which would tell you what is expected in the future.

SF (DON'T call it Frisco! They hate that.) is a great walking city. Walk the Haight all the way down to its western end, where it terminates at Golden Gate Park. Those 5 or 6 blocks of Haight St, between Ashbury and Stanyan Park Blvd, have the small clubs, cinemas, and the famous Amoeba record store. There will be plenty of fliers announcing shows.

I was thinking to book a hotel in downtown area, do you think it will be easy to return back by public transport after a concert?
