Republic of Montenegro Montenegro - Worth a Visit?
Posted: Tue May 12, 2009 10:50 AM UTC
Howdy Y'All,

I'm contemplating visiting Montenegro in July/August. While I've heard that it's a beautiful country, I'm struggling to find much more detail beyond that.

Could someone provide some highlights, whether it's worth a visit, for how long and is it cheap/expensive?

I'm also thinking of visiting Croatia, where would be more enjoyable?

You could easily combine a visit to Dubrovnik with a visit to Montenegro -Dubrovnik is very close to the Croata/Montenegro border. Both countries have a lot to offere -history, beautiful scenery and quality holidays.
There is plenty of information available on both countries. Use the destination search box at top right of the Page to discover VT reports, reviews and tips. Google for more information - and - I never go anywhere without a good travel guide -try the rough Guides or Lonely Planet.

As you have not yet completed your personal profile I do not know your travel interests so can only say I have been to both and enjoyed both. Welcome to VT and I hope you enjoy your trip .

both places are very scenic, but i would personally rate montenegro over crpatia cuase you have scenery that is at least as good as croatia, but a lot less tourists.
kotor is my favorite town on the adriatic coast.

Howdy Y'All,

Thanks for your responses - all very useful and insightful.

Tell me, would it be true to say that Montenegro is remarkably similar to Croatia, yet less "discovered"?

Are both the coastal and inland regions similar to those of Croatia? Moreover, is the culture, food, people similar to Croatia?

Thanks for your help everyone - keep picking winners!

Personally I think the nature of coastal Montenegro is some the most beautiful and dramatic I have seen. The Kotor Bay/Fjord is just stunning. The small white Venician town on the coast look a lot like the ones further north in Croatia but the way they are nestled between the steep mountains and the see is amazingly effectful.

In terms of money my experience is that Montenegro is someting like half or a third of Croatia. But it is far more difficault to plan as internetbookings for more humble places appear not to exist.

I second the other posters... Maybe you could combine Montenegro with Dobrownik. Croatia should also be easier to reach(I think you can fly to Dobrownik with easyjet) while there are few connections to Montenegro and hardly any to the coast.

The landscapes of inland Montenegro, especially around Durmitor National Park and the Tara Canyon, are really special and I don't think Croatia has quite the same thing (the mountains aren't as high, for example). In particular hiking in Durmitor is probably as good as anywhere in Europe (and less crowded than many comparable mountain ranges). But on the other hand, inland Croatia has Plitvice Lakes National Park, which is just as special in its own smaller-scale way.

As someone else said, the coastal scenery around the Bay of Kotor is also beautiful. On the other hand, Montenegro doesn't really have islands which are a special feature of Croatia. And apart from Kotor and a couple of other places, most cities and towns in Montenegro aren't that memorable.

If you expect Montenegro to be "less discovered" you might be disappointed, especially visiting in July/August. The coastline is popular for summer holidays - maybe less well known to Western Europeans (although that is changing), but well known to people in the neighbouring area and also popular with Russians. There is also quite a lot of development going on along the coast. Not a reason to avoid it, just be realistic about what to expect.

As someone already said, you could combine the two, many people approach Montenegro via Dubrovnik anyway. But I don't know how long you have.
