Areas to avoid Posted: Mon May 11, 2009 04:49 PM UTC
Hi
Does anyone know the neighbourhoods to avoid in Prague, searching for hotels,
need to know good and safe areas
Also whats the average price per night in EUR for a double room in a 3 star hotel in the city center, i.e. walking distance to attrections etc..
Does anyone have experiance where, you went without booking ahead and found good places from the tourist office? special deals etc..
Thanks
ER

hiya we stayed in hotel extol inn which is a hotel and hostel - link to website on my prague pages
bit out of the way but was very cheap and nice and clean - and on the trolleybus/tram into the tourist area in a few minutes from the end of the street
try DC prague tourist website for ideas - we booked some gig tickets through them with no problems
enjoy prague - we did

I used www.venere.com and www.booking.com to find hotels, and booked through booking.com (that time).
I didn't feel that anywhere in central Prague was unsafe (as a single middle-aged female traveller) so I suggest you have a look and see what appeals to you/fits your budget. I'd suggest you stay in the central part of the city, if possible (my hotel was in Nove Mesto) simply for ease of access to the ajor sights.
Personally, I would not want to turn up in Prague without having pre-booked accommodation. It is a very popular city and accommodation prices reflect this. I prefer to make my own choice of accommodation rather than have to pick from what is left. But that is up to you, of course.

We stayed at the Hotel Atos - it was in a fairly quiet location across the river from the main centre but with good access to the Charles Bridge, Castle, and Petrin Park.
In fact, we couldn't fault it - there are several tram stops just around the corner if you want to use the tram instead of walking. It is mid-way between the Charles Bridge and the Legions Bridge in the "Little Quarter". One or two nice quiet bars around there too.

Hi,
My husband and I stayed at the Flakenstiener Hotel Maria.I'd highly recommend it.We booked through booking.com and got a good deal(around 80 euros incl breakfast).I remember a couple walked in when we were at the lobby to book rooms and the spot rate they gave them was much higher than what we got.So I think it'll be a good idea to book in advance. This hotel is very centrally located and very close to the railway station which was convenient for us coz we were travelling by train.
Happy travels

I would rather not speak of unsafe areas - but where you have to pay most attention. There are zillions of pickpockets operating on Charles Bridge, as it is so crowded. So secure your belongings, hold tight to your bags (for example, if you have a backpack, wear it on your chest, if there are lots of people). Do not accept help if someone tells you you have mustard on your jacket, etc. All these tricks.
I have not felt unsafe in Prague, not even when walking alone at night. But when you get into crowds you have to be cautious at any time of the day.
A cheap option of accommodation is to stay on a boat on the Vltava river. They are called Botels (tip on my Prague page), and are close to the city's attractions.

Prague, like all tourist-popular European cities, has its pickpockets and opportunistic thieves.
Avoiding such things is simply a matter of staying alert and using normal city common sense.
