I am thinking of heading to cambodia and was wondering if anyone knew of a local tour company (something equivilant to 'Sinh Cafe' in vietnam) who run day trips and short trips reasonablly cheaply??

obviously every traveller is different (thankfully!) so I don't know what your requirements are. I visited Cambodia a few years ago, and did not use one single tour company. As I travelled around, I spoke to other travellers, asked at the places I was staying etc. I do not think you need to restrict yourself to a single company. Go with local opinion, believe me you will find the Khmer so friendly and willing to help.

Perhaps I was just lucky but I did not have one bad experience on day trips etc. by using this theory.

I guess at this point i'm just planning and more than anything trying to get an idea of what is available and at what prices from local companys. All the packages i can find online seem far too expensive. We were going on good day trips in vietnam for less than $US10 and what i'm finding for cambodia is more like $US70.

If you could give me an idea of what a city tour and overnight trip might cost that'd be great?

i go with fergy's suggestion. day tours are cheap in cambodia and you don't really need a tour guide all the time... for example you can hire an SUV for US$40/day to drive you around Angkor Wat. you can hire a bicycle for US$3/day.

I was in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap in Mar 09. US$70 per day seems very high. I have contact information on two guides (~$25/day) and a tuk tuk driver (~$12/day) under my Cambodia General tips. Each of my hotels also offered various tour packages. I recommend waiting until you arrive to arrange tours (just book with one of the many hotels that have airport or bus station pick up). With the world economy like it is, the tourist sites (esp. Angkor) have had a big drop in attendance. There is a lot of competition and prices are probably much lower than advertised online.
