Hi,

can anybody recommend tours that take you to the desert and probably stay for a night?

In Aleppo, Damascus, and other major cities, local tour operators are in the city center who will eagerly arrange desert trips. Despite it's huge bounty of antiquities, Syria is not a major tourism nation. A good place to visit for private tour operators would be out in Palmyra (see my notes on the ruins there). You can get to Palmyra by puiblic bus from Damascus. We discussed such a venture with a driver, but decided not due to time limitations. There are a number of significant ruins out in eastern Syria, but be careful along the Iraq border area.
