Re: Ohane Stream Hot Springs Posted: Sun May 10, 2009 10:46 PM UTC
I do not know those hot springs but think that Pam's suspicions are absolutely right. I have looked at the named website and seen that they list backcountry pools in the wilderness on top of the list, as the Welcome Flat pools along the Copland Track are number two. There are lots of such hots springs in the middle of nowhere in New Zealand, they are just holes in the landscape with hot water. Trampers enjoy to sit in them - but you have to be cautious to not get your ears or nose under the water, as parasites could get into your system.
Ohane Stream is a very remote area. On the DoC website you can find a multi-day walk with lots of river crossings, which includes the Ohane Stream - but no hot pool is mentioned. This, of course, does not mean that it would not exist. If you look at the location of the pool you see that access is most likely by walking only.
