Khett Siem Reab which hotel?
Posted: Sat May 9, 2009 01:26 PM UTC
can't decide between a 20$ hotel with no pool and a 50$+ with pool.
Am considering the following options:
Golden Banana, Auberge Mont Royal,Casa Angkor, La Noria, Borann,Claremont
We are a 50-6- yr old couple and we are not interested in massages or luxurious places, but just homey and comfortable, clean and a/c
any recommendations most welcome.

for $20, I would suggest Mandalay Inn. Its more of a guest house but clean and homey. For $50, I suggest Dara Reangsey on the main highway to Phnom Penh with a clean homey feel, nice pool and beautiful decor. If you want something closer to Siem Reap centre then Angkor Star or Somedevi would be appropriate. Both have nice pools. There are plenty of hotel choices in Siem Reap so I can only comment on the above as I have stayed in the ones mentined above. The hotels you requested may be fine but have not stayed there so I cannot really make a call for you. If you have any other criteria to make your choice of hotel that might help us VTers to help you.

Hi there
I stayed at Casa Angkor last February and it was really nice! Went there with my tour group, so not sure of prices but really enjoyed it. Rooms are lovely, very clean and there is a rainforest shower in the bathroom. There is a small restaurant which serves nice food and a small pool outside. The hotel is quiet as it is located away from the main road, but you can walk to the centre in 10-15 minutes or grab a tuk-tuk from outside. I would definitely stay there again!

Whatever hotel you choose, try to stay as close to the central market and pub street as possible. It is real nice to be withing walking distance of food, drink and shopping. In Siem Reap, there is not much of intrest outside of the temples. Make the trip a little more convient for youself by staying downtown. I stayed just over a mile from the market, so I had to ride a tuk tuk everytime I wanted to go anywhere. I also didn't like the fact that it was a dollar into town, and 2 coming back, because they have you in their grasp, so to speak.

I did like having a pool at my hotel. It was nice after being out in the heat and sunshine to hit the water for an hour. If that doesn't matter to you, stay in a cheap place, but downtown. You can see more on my page.

Ruth, you have already gotten some excellent advice from others more familiar with Siem Reap than I, but I can second some of their recommendations. The suggestion to stay within walking distance of downtown is excellent. There are probably 50 nice hotels on the road to the airport and the road to the temples; none of which are within walking distance of downtown. I actually stayed at the Mandalay Inn. It was clean, comfortable and in a convenient location, although it had some guests that were noisy one of the five nights I was there.

I only walked by it a couple of times, but the Bopha Angkor (http://www.bopha-angkor.com/index.html) might be the perfect compromise for you. It is in the $50 range, has a pool, and is just across the river from downtown. It looked really nice but gets mixed reviews on TripAdvisor. Lonely Planet says that it was recently renovated. That may explain the different reviews.
