Tha Back Bay area of Boston has a lot of good restaurants and is close to downtown and Boston Common, where a lot of the historic sights are located. Cambridge, a suburb adjacent to Boston, has a lot of bars (and restaurants)., since it is home to a few colleges, including Harvard.

While in Salem, make sure to visit the Peabody-Essex Museum, a very good museum about art and history from the 1800s, when Salem was a busy port.

Make sure you go to the Union Oyster House. They have the best clam chowder. Their website is http://www.unionoysterhouse.com/

I have gone to Boston several times with my girlfriends and we have always gone to the Union Oyster House for lunch. It's known as the oldest restaurant in Boston.

October is a great time of year to visit Salem. I would avoid the cheesy horror "museums" while there. Some good places to visit there are the Witch House, House of Seven Gables, Pickering Wharf, The Witch Trial Memorial, and the PEM as mentioned above. For food there, The Beerworks, Cilantro, Fins, Brother's Deli, Bella Luna are all good.

In Boston, the North End is a must if you love Italian food, and the Old North Church is there as well. Newbury Street is the high rent district, with many boutique shops and nice restaurants. Also make sure to get on the red line into Harvard Square in Cambridge.

There is a ton to do!
