I am english. In my late 50s and towards the last quarter of this year I hope to visit buenos aires with my wife, for 2 reasons really
1 I would like to visit south america and feel that culture
2 I would like to learn spanish
Can anyone recommend a good spanish school for someone my age ?
Can someone recommend a reasonably priced, cheap appartment in the central areas eg recoleta etc ?
After a month or so I am then thinking of going to mar del plata and would like similar info for there also if possible please

Is there a reason you want a school? If you and your wife plan on taking lessons then I would recommend a private tutor. You would get much more training and the price would be about the same or even less than both of you paying for a school. One teacher I would highly recommend is Daniel Fernandez http://www.spanishtutor.com.ar/

As for an apartment, not sure what your definition of "reasonably priced" might be. One good place to start would be with Facundo Yebne who owns Vacation Rentals Argentina http://www.vacationrentalargentina.com/ Much depends on your length of stay, the longer the rental period the better price you should be able to arrange.

Is there a reason you are wanting to visit Mar del Plata? If it is only for the beach I would recommend looking at one of the smaller nearby beach towns, Villa Gesell,Miramar, Pinamar or Cariló.

Hope this helps get you started and if you have more questions obviously ask away.

suerte
SAM

I'd recommend Puerto B. A. - a small language school in a quiet residential areas a few blocks from Plaza Serrano. The teachers Carina and Lilián are excellent and I can particularly recommend the cinema and theatre courses offered. (www.puertobaspanish.com.ar) As for accommodation, you could try www.me.com/baflat :))

For your trip to Mar del Plata, I recommend taking a bus from the Retiro Micro (bus) Station. These travel buses are very common in Argentina and the prices are very good. See the links below. I highly recommend letting someone help you with this when you get to Bs As. Tourist and locals are very friendly and helpful, so don't sweat that until you get there.

As far as where to stay in Mar del Plata, I recommend two places. Hotel Amsterdam and Hotel Las Rocas. Keep in mind that in Argentina there are two standards of hotel rates. Those charged to tourist (foreigners) and those charged to Argentines. That is just the way that it is.

Hi,
Regarding Spanish lessons in Buenos Aires, I can highly reccommend you Verbum school. The atmosphere is very welcomed and warm, is a middle size school, has a nice garden, the staff is helpful and my teachers were very good.
It is located close to Palermo, an area I reccommend you more than Recoleta to stay.

Surprised to see you're from Wigan. I grew up in Longridge and just got back to California from there on Saturday. A friend and I are going to Buenos Aires in June and we are renting an apartment in Palermo (2 bedrooms) for about $475 for 8 nights. The rental agency was recommended by a San Francisco couple who rented a one-bedroom apartment for 10 nights. The website is www.bytargentina.com. Their website gives good descriptions of the apartments and good photos. I have gone to Spanish classes in many Central and South American countries but not Buenos Aires, so can't recommend a school there. I spent one day and one night in BA about 9 years ago on route to Antarctica and I'm really looking forward to this trip to BA.

I have recently spent 4 weeks at Alem School in Buenos Aires. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the school. It is very well operated and has a fantastic staff. Their teaching methods are effective and teachers are great.
I have studies in several countries but this has been by far the best experience.
Their website is www.alemspanishschool.com.ar
