Donna - British Airways once refused to check me in on a flight to LA because I produced, when asked for a Credit Card, a different one to the one I had used when making the reservation.
After making a fuss, obviously producing Passport, then Driving Licence and my Dept of Social Security Pension details they gave me my boarding card.
Easycar hire in Barcelona refused to let me have a car until I had completed, in full, their complicated application form online, standing at a computer in the corner of the cupboard they called an office.
So now I am always very careful about it - but admit it has never seemed to be questioned in hotels, either here in UK, or abroad.
