Prague Travelling by train.
Posted: Thu May 7, 2009 10:15 AM UTC
Hi!everybody,
MY wife and I are travelling to Prague in November of this year, and are travelling from Prague to Budapest by train. Can anybody tell me the approximate train fare(second class).I would like to take a day journey.Have tried to log on to Czech Rail but, could not get any results.
Furthermore from Budapest we want to travel to Venice, for which we would like to take the night train. Please let me know the fare for a 2nd class Couchette fare in a four berth compartment. Can I book on line and how soon do I have to make the bookings. Please let me know the sites I would have to log on.
Importantly, since we are travelling on a schengen visa,we would have to travel to Vienna and from there take the night train to Venice. There is also a day train from Vienna which leaves from Sudbahnhof, but the train from Budapest arrives on Westbahnhof. How far are the two stations from each other.
In effect I have asked for answers to three querries.
All the help would be more than welcomed.
Many thanks,
jayarep.

Do not use the site cited previously! This is an agency for stupid tourists.

Regular fare in second class from Praha to Budapest is 54,40 EUR payable at a Czech station in local currency which is at the moment 1480 CZK. You can purchase this ticket at any time before departure, reservation is not necessary. You can also purchase the ticket online on https://eshop.cd.cz/international/search_cd-mav.aspx?lang=E , possibly at a lower price with limited availability.

Standard fare from Budapest to Wien is 34 EUR. Maybe there are cheaper options searching on www.mav.hu.

You can book the train from Wien to Venezia on https://ticket.oebb.at/bin/frame_ticket.pl?ticket=italy.pl . The day train takes leaves from Wien Südbahnhof and takes the direct route; the night train leaves from Wien Westbahnhof and goes through Salzburg. Trains from Budapest usually arrive at Wien Westbahnhof.

Dear Kosmarrrova,

Do you really think 156 USD for a ticket is "help"??

Regular Czech railways ticket price Prague - Budapest is 55 EUR (around 73 USD).

If you register and buy on-line https://eshop.cd.cz/international/search_cd-mav.aspx
You can have ticket for 517 CZK = 19 EUR = 26 USD.

However tickets for November are not on sale yet, but you should have no problem getting tickets a month in advance.

Use 19 euro ticket from Praha to BP from cd eshop, afterwards you can buy any time BP-Wien one way for 13 euro - it is special tariff available only in Hungary.
For Wien-Venice it is better to book tickets in advance, this way you can use Sparschiene 39 euro couchette tickets (or 29 euro seat)
If you want to travel by daytime train from Wien to Venice you can catch it on Wien Meidling, all BP-Wien trains stop there too before arriving at Wien West

My husband and i did the 1st 2 legs by train last Feb.kopvas is the one who helped us find these tickets. The Prague - Buda ticket was 19 Euros from CD ( as mentioned above) and we bought it online.

The Budapest - Vienna ticket was about 13 euros per person but we could not book this ticket online as the Hungarian railways site is not available in English. So we booked it from Budapest on arrival. The train stops in Budapest Keleti station and its one of the worst stations i've seen in Europe. The officials are totally clueless and they said the tickets are about 40 euros. But VTer fischert (Tamas) had told us the same tickets can be bought from Andrassy Ut for 13 euros. There the officials speak good english and it was fairly easy to book them.So i'd advice you do the same.If you need more details feel free to ask

Hope this helps

Harsha

There is no need to book BP-Wien tickets in advance, you can buy them at fixed price any time (even 10 minutes before the train) + no seat reservation needed.
And about ticket offices - I'd personally prefer to use Wasteels office (at Keleti station when you look into the city on you left - green sign)

Thanks for all the information sent to me and will most certainly come useful in buying our tickets.
I plan to take the BP-Wien train at 09:10 in the morning and reach Wien westbahnhof at 12:10.The train to Venice leaves at 12:57 from sudbahnhof. The question is,whether I have enough time to transfer to sudbahnhof and catch the train.
Also, how do I buy our tickets on line for the sector Wien-Vienna.
Once again many thanks for all the replies.
