Dubrovnik Dilemma - Where to stay?
Posted: Thu May 7, 2009 07:11 AM UTC
Hi,

I will be going to Dubrovnik on vacation in September for 11 days. After reading some guide books, and searching the web, I still do not know where to stay! There is a conspicuous lack of budget accommodations in Dubrovnik. Everything seems to be expensive and way overrated!

Is it recommended to stay in the Lapad area? Is it really far from the Old Town?
Any comments about Hotel LaPad and Hotel Zagreb? Are any of these hotels worth staying?

What is the best way to get to this area from the DBV airport? Are the bus lines reliable?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I look forward to hearing from someone soon,

Thanks a million,

We stayed on the Lapad peninsular for two weeks in a self catering apartment and found it no less conveneinet than a stay some years before right outside the old town gate.
There is a bus service into Dubrovnik from the airport and regular buses from Dubrovnik to the whole of the Lapad area, stopping at, or close by, most of the hotels.
Our apartment was above the Kompas Hotel and we used its facilities - restaurants and their lift to take us down to beach level and - back up to the top where our apartment was situated.
The bus into the town takes only 10-15 minutes. It passes the Lapad Hotel - I must say the Kompas has a better location. We used to take the bus into town from the top level of the Kompas Hotel.
Take a look at my Dubrovnik page and/or email me for more information.

Staying on Dubrovnik is extremly expencive. Dubrovnik eaven in komunist/Tito's times of Yougoslavia, never had boudget accomodation.
Always were flagship holiday spot together with Sveti Stefan in now MOntenegro.
Recent visit of Holliwood stars, made it eaven more so.
Dubrovnik, specilay around the Old Town have been on increase. Report is that this summer night in private accomodation in Dubrovnik, will be around €22-25 a nite, despite hard economic times.Depends wath you are looking in accomodation. expencive 5* or mid range 3* or youth hostel/budget accomodation.
From two above I'd choose Zagreb, friends from York were there last summer & they loved it.
Only thing they reported that the dinner is something to be desired.
But if you go on B&B bases, you are more than OK, as is very close to the Old town, but also have smal market, supermarket, chemist, bakery & more in the neighborhood.
I can not say for Hotel Lapad as I have never been.
If you are not that bothered if it's colse to the old town or not than I sugest chek this Youth Hostel, it is little bit off the old town, but is close to the beach.Might be aslo good alternative.

Dubrovnik is certainly the most expensive place in Croatia to choose to spend your vacation. If you're looking for a beach, sun and relaxing sort of holiday, why not opt for just a couple of days in Dubrovnik itself to check it out (and it is definitely worth checking out - it's a special place) and then hopping on a bus and heading off somewhere else for a few days by the beach. A morning on a bus (cheap, frequent, efficient) will get you to the Makarska Riviera area where in late September you shouldn't have any problem finding reasonably priced accommodation. From Makaraska you could take a day trip up to Split, catch a ferry across to Sumartin on the island of Brac (half an hour away), or - for something completely different - catch a local bus or take a day tour to Mostar across the border in Hercegovina.

Thank you.

Do you happen to know long does the bus ride take from Dubrovnik to Makarska?
Would you recommend Makarska over Brela?

Thanks a million.

In & around Makarska I recomand village of Tucepi, as place to stay, has nice cove with sandy beach, with few bars on the beach, plenty private accomodation (SOBE)--rooms.
As between Makarska & Brela , I will choose Brela.

But again choice is yours.

Dear Caiquedec,

no, Lapad is not far away from the Old Town. You will have to take a bus and drive for about 12 min. Every hotel in Dubrovnik is worth to stay, believe me. Think about hotel Sumratin. Great food, nice people, only 1 min walking from the beach. Yes, Dubrovnik is little expensive but it worth. You will fall in love with this place. The most beautiful town in my opinion. Enjoy!!!!!

Hi,

We have just returned from Croatia. We stayed in the old town at Villa Flora. It was lovely and so cheap! About 40 Euro including breakfast ( for 2) It was a tiny hotel...only 4 rooms I think. At one stage we were the only guests so we had the breakfast room and kitchen to ourselves. No lobby or person on site...we just let ourselves in and had the place to ourselves!!! The location was wonderful...up one of Dubrovniks narrow steep lane ways with washing hanging from windows (including our own!) Just a few steps from cafes and restaurants and an internet cafe! the room was lovely and clean...with ensuite bathroom. Could not have asked for better. Booked through hostelbookers or hostelworld I think. You'll love Dubrovnik! I would stay in the old town and walk around to the beach...its all very close.

Hi there,

Dubrovnik is wonderful. I have been there twice and I am going back in August. Hotels are expensive however private renting is much better if you know the right place where you can get a room for about 40 Euros a night.

I can highly recommend the place where I stayed the last 2 times and will be again this year. It is in Lapad and close to Lapad beach and the fantastic Copa Cabanna beach. It also close to restaurants, shopping, etc. Check out the following link for full details and reservations

Have a safe trip and happy travels! ;0)
